JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for providing medical imaging services as directed by the physician and/or radiologist. Completes assigned responsibilities within his/her certification with little or no direct supervision. Participates in performance improvement activities and quality monitoring for the department.

Mammography Responsibilities

• Perform screening and diagnostic mammography examinations according to established protocols, radiologist preferences, MQSA requirements, ACR guidelines, and organizational procedures.
• Obtain technically adequate mammographic images through appropriate patient positioning, compression, exposure selection, and image acquisition.
• Demonstrate proficiency with routine and specialized mammographic views, including additional diagnostic views as ordered or requested.
• Perform diagnostic mammography procedures and assist with evaluation of abnormal or suspicious findings.
• Obtain and document appropriate patient history, including breast symptoms, prior procedures, surgeries, biopsies, cancer history, hormone use, family history, and other relevant information.
• Review prior breast imaging when available and ensure relevant prior examinations are appropriately identified for comparison.
• Communicate appropriately with patients regarding breast symptoms, palpable abnormalities, procedures, and expectations during diagnostic examinations.
• Assist radiologists with breast imaging procedures and interventions within the technologist's scope of practice and organizational protocols.
• Prepare patients for breast procedures and provide appropriate post-procedure instructions.
• Maintain accurate documentation associated with mammography examinations and procedures.
• Follow all applicable MQSA requirements, including quality control, documentation, image quality, patient history, and equipment-related requirements.
• Participate in mammography quality assurance and quality control activities.
• Maintain required mammography continuing education and maintain appropriate credentials and certifications.
• Recognize technically inadequate or potentially concerning images and repeat or obtain additional images as appropriate.
• Maintain a high level of sensitivity and professionalism due to the personal and emotional nature of breast imaging.

CT/XR Responsibilities

• Perform routine and specialized CT examinations according to established protocols and radiologist direction.
• Review examination orders and clinical indications to ensure the appropriate CT protocol is performed.
• Prepare patients for CT examinations, including verification of relevant history, allergies, renal function, pregnancy status when applicable, and other safety considerations.
• Screen patients for contraindications and potential risks associated with CT and contrast-enhanced examinations.
• Administer intravenous contrast media according to established protocols, organizational policy, and scope of practice.
• Verify appropriate IV access and select appropriate supplies and injection parameters for the examination.
• Operate CT equipment safely and efficiently while selecting appropriate scan parameters based on the patient's examination and clinical needs.
• Perform routine and advanced CT examinations, including examinations requiring multiphase imaging, angiographic techniques, contrast administration, or specialized reconstructions as applicable.
• Optimize scanning techniques to obtain diagnostic-quality images while applying the ALARA principle and minimizing unnecessary radiation exposure.
• Recognize and appropriately respond to contrast reactions, adverse events, extravasation, and other patient complications.
• Maintain competency in emergency response procedures and follow established protocols for managing patients who experience an acute change in condition.
• Perform appropriate image post-processing and reconstructions as required for the examination.
• Evaluate image quality during the examination and repeat or obtain additional images when clinically appropriate.
• Ensure images are accurately labeled, documented, and transmitted to PACS and other appropriate systems.
• Communicate significant patient concerns, unexpected findings, examination limitations, or other issues to the appropriate radiologist or provider according to department procedures.
