Job description

Job Details

The Mammography Technologist performs mammography exams, screenings, and diagnostic studies, and assists during invasive procedures. Under the physician's direction, the technologist detects breast tissue abnormalities and presents findings for diagnosis. The role includes delivering patient care and education before, during, and after procedures.

Job Description
  1. Interact with co-workers, visitors, and staff in line with Jefferson's values.
  2. Operate mammography equipment and perform examinations for screening and diagnostic purposes.
  3. Ensure procedure success by positioning patients and breasts correctly, instructing patients, and adjusting equipment settings.
  4. Follow radiation safety standards to protect staff and patients.
  5. Document services by completing patient records.
  6. Gather complete patient history and provide support before, during, and after mammograms, including explaining procedures and answering questions.
  7. Maintain equipment through preventive care, troubleshooting, and inventory management.
  8. Perform additional duties as directed by supervisors, including quality assurance tasks.
  9. Maintain ongoing education to meet licensing and job requirements.
  10. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Knowledge of mammographic imaging techniques and procedures for diagnosing breast diseases.
  • Ability to prepare and monitor patients during imaging procedures and respond to emergencies.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Graduate from a recognized School of Radiology Sciences or hold a current ARRT Registry in Radiology Technology (R). ARRT (R) and (CT) preferred.
  • For technologists qualifying after April 28, 1999, at least 40 hours of documented mammography training is required.
  • Training in Digital Mammography or on-the-job training with competency and didactic completion required; additional months needed for certification.
  • Preferred 6 months to 1 year experience.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • ARRT certification in radiography; ARRT advanced certification in Mammography preferred. MQSA compliance with 15 CEUs in 36 months is also preferred. Registry eligibility is 6 months.
