Schechter Boston is seeking a Maker Arts Teacher to lead hands-on metal jewelry, tool skills, and ceramics classes in a fully equipped STEAM studio. The role focuses on guiding grades 3–5 and middle school students through practical making, experimentation, and design.
The ideal candidate has strong hands-on craft skills, patience, and enthusiasm for working with children. Schedule is one afternoon per week, with potential for two afternoons for the right candidate.
Schechter Boston is opening a new STEAM Center, and we’re looking for a creative, technically skilled educator or working artist to help students in grades 3–5 and middle school explore, invent, design, and build.
We’re looking for someone who loves making things, enjoys solving problems, and is excited to help students bring their own ideas to life. This is an opportunity to share your craft, introduce young makers to real tools and materials, and inspire the next generation of creative thinkers.
The Maker Arts Teacher will lead small-group classes and workshops in metal jewelry, tool skills, and ceramics in a fully equipped, purpose-built studio. The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on skills, a passion for making, and the patience and enthusiasm to guide students as they experiment, problem-solve, and develop new skills.
Schedule: One afternoon per week, with the possibility of two afternoons for the right candidate.
Teach hands-on making: Introduce students to metalsmithing techniques, including sawing, filing, soldering, stamping, forming, and finishing.
Develop tool skills: Teach students to use studio tools and equipment safely, responsibly, and confidently.
Explore ceramics: Guide students through wheel throwing, including centering clay, pulling walls, trimming, and glazing.
Inspire design thinking: Create projects that encourage students to sketch, prototype, experiment, revise, make, and present their finished work.
Support creative problem-solving: Help students work through challenges, learn from mistakes, and develop confidence in their abilities.
Maintain a safe studio: Keep tools, materials, and workspaces organized while modeling safe and responsible studio practices.
Collaborate on curriculum: Help shape engaging, age-appropriate projects that connect craftsmanship, creativity, and STEAM learning.
The ideal candidate will bring:
Experience as a practicing jeweler, metalsmith, ceramicist, or maker, with strong hands-on technical skills.
Experience with metal jewelry fabrication and/or ceramics, particularly wheel throwing.
A passion for working with children and helping them develop new skills.
Patience, energy, creativity, and the ability to explain technical processes clearly.
A strong commitment to safety, organization, and responsible tool use.
A willingness to experiment, adapt projects for different ages and abilities, and encourage students to learn through doing.
Teaching experience is a plus, but it is not required. We welcome working artists and makers who are excited to bring their expertise into an educational setting.
A well-equipped, purpose-built STEAM studio.
Small-group instruction and the opportunity to work closely with students.
A flexible schedule designed around your afternoon availability.
Creative freedom to help shape curriculum and develop hands‑on projects.
A collaborative, supportive school community that values creativity, craftsmanship, and continuous learning.
Compensation will be $75-$150/hour for classes. Workshops and Assistant Teachers $100+/hour.
Schechter Boston offers a supportive work environment that values professional growth, collaboration, and the individual strengths each person brings to the community. Additional benefits may be available depending on the position’s employment classification and scheduled hours.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the position will remain open until filled.
