Job summary

Xcel Energy Services Inc is seeking interns to join the Major Projects Group, working in-person on active construction projects. The paid internship provides hands-on experience in construction project management and field engineering, applying engineering principles and professional communication on real projects.

Interns will see how a project is built from engineered drawings, learn from staff across the organization, and develop problem-solving skills during hands-on training.

Qualifications

  • Minimum GPA 3.0 (out of 4.0) or higher.
  • Currently enrolled as a junior or higher in ABET-accredited college or university pursuing Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering.
  • Must be able to commute in-person to project sites.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in construction oversight and planning, field inspections, and safety observations.
  • Collaborate with Xcel staff to ensure project is built per codes and standards.
  • Learn about drawing updates and field engineering changes during active projects.
  • Gain knowledge of managing professional project relationships.
  • Assist with internal documentation, tracking of project metrics, and reporting.
  • Assist with vendor outreach and coordination.

Xcel Energy is seeking candidates to support our Major Projects Group, working in-person on active construction projects. The paid internship provides an opportunity to showcase your abilities in the engineering group that supports both new construction and retrofits of electric power plants. The program provides practical work experience in construction project management and field engineering, developing your skills in real-time problem solving, application of engineering principles, and professional communication. Each intern will have the opportunity to see first‑hand how a project is built from an already completed set of engineered drawings. The program will allow you to apply what you’ve learned in school and further enhance your knowledge through hands‑on training, while also providing opportunities to learn and network with a variety of staff across the organization.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Participate in construction oversight and planning, field inspections, and safety observations.
  • Collaborate with Xcel staff to ensure the project is built in accordance with applicable engineering codes and standards.
  • Learn about drawing updates and field engineering changes that occur during an active project.
  • Gain knowledge of how to manage vital professional project relationships.
  • Assist with internal documentation, tracking of project metrics, and reporting.
  • Assist with vendor outreach and coordination.

This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date.

This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Current student, Junior or higher Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering
  • Must have a reliable means of transportation to be able to commute to work 100% in-person at the assigned project site. Sites at either Sherco (Becker, MN) area, Elk Creek Solar (Menomonie, WI), or Lyon County Gas Project (Garvin, MN).
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher
  • Completed 2 years of undergraduate coursework.
  • Experience or Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Candidate must either already live within a commutable distance or be able to relocate for several months.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $23.10 to $24.60 per hour
