Job summary

City of Grand Island, NE is seeking a Wastewater Maintenance Worker to perform a range of tasks in operating, constructing, maintaining and repairing the wastewater collection system and related facilities. You will assist in cleaning, repair, and locating sewer mains, and operate trucks and other equipment while following safety procedures.

The role requires lifting heavy weights, basic computer use, map interpretation, and the ability to work with limited supervision.

Qualifications

• No experience is required; industrial maintenance preferred.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Valid Class A CDL within 3 months of hire.
• Completion of Sacramento Study Course – Operation & Maintenance of Wastewater Collection System, Volume 1 within twelve months.

Responsibilities

• Assist in cleaning and repair of the wastewater collection system.
• Maintain inventory of tools and equipment necessary to perform maintenance and repair activities; request parts necessary to perform maintenance and repairs.
• Maintain various records of maintenance and repair services.
• Remove snow and ice from City facilities when necessary.
• Investigate public complaints and determine source of problem.
• Locate sewer mains for the City and other outside utility companies.
• Operate construction and maintenance equipment such as trucks, tractors, and loaders for a variety of construction and maintenance projects at the facility.
• Utilize a variety of hand and power tools; assist in routine maintenance of such equipment.
• Utilize proper safety precautions in all work performed.
• Assist in other sections of the department as necessary.
• Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior when dealing with internal and external customers.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable is required.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Job description

Salary for position is effective October 4, 2026.

Assist in cleaning and repair of the wastewater collection system in the City.

Maintain inventory of tools and equipment necessary to perform maintenance and repair activities; request parts necessary to perform maintenance and repairs.

Maintain various records of maintenance and repair services.

Knowledge of:

Safe maintenance and repair practices and procedures used at the facility.

Purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools.

Hydraulic, electric, pneumatic, and pumping systems at the facility.

Ability to:

Perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities.

Perform difficult manual labor tasks including lifting heavy weights, stooping, bending and twisting.

Interpret City maps regarding the location of various City infrastructure.

Operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Provide functional and technical supervision to less experienced personnel.

Work effectively in the absence of close supervision.

Learn basic computer operation.

Experience:

No experience is required. Previous experience in industrial maintenance is preferred.

Training:

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. High school diploma or GED preferred.

License or Certification:

Employee must possess a valid Class A commercial driver’s license within three (3) months of hire date and maintain insurability as determined by the City’s insurance carrier. Click here to view our driver eligibility requirements.

Completion of Sacramento Study Course – Operation & Maintenance of Wastewater Collection System, Volume 1 with or without the Provisional qualification within twelve (12) months of hire date.

Working Hours:

Monday-Thursday: 5:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Salary:

Position will start at the entry level of the City's salary table. Consideration may be given if experience exceeds entry level qualifications.

Will receive a step increase upon successful completion of six (6) months of service and a step increase upon successful completion of twelve (12) months of service then will move along the steps annually upon a successful review.
