Position Overview/Duties
Serves as Maintenance Worker for Operations of USACE, performs duties which cover the full range of maintenance tasks requiring the application of journeyman level skills in a wide variety of trades and crafts.
- DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT/DUTIES:
- Troubleshoot, locate, and make basic repairs of electrical wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures in project intake structures, outlet works, and dams, gauging stations, office and maintenance buildings, recreational facilities, and other associated electrical systems.
- Read and interpret blueprints and technical manuals to effect repairs.
- Perform basic carpentry work associated with maintaining operations buildings and public access areas. Including but not limited to repair and modify framework, forms, doors, and windows.
- Assist in installing, modifying, and repairing existing and new utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water and oil distribution systems, water closets, tubs, and showers.
- Use measuring tape, rule, hacksaw, hand and power pipe threader and cutter, packing and caulking iron, and pipe wrenches.
- Operate equipment such as pick-up trucks, dump trucks equipped with a pintle hitch, and heavy equipment trailers with a combined weight over 26,000 pounds.
Operate tractors equipped with a backhoe to mow fields, transport equipment and materials, plant/harvest crops, move earth, and dig ditches.

- APPLICABILITY/AREA OF CONSIDERATION: This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD, Section 9905 to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Minimum Qualifications Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. WG-05 level is defined as experience performing routine semi-skilled maintenance, repair tasks, and basic equipment operation in support of facilities, utility systems, or grounds maintenance under general supervision. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
WG 08 (full performance)
minimum qualifications: Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. WG-08 level is defined as experience performing multi-trade maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on facility structures and utility systems (electrical, carpentry, plumbing, masonry) combined with the operation and mechanical servicing of heavy motor vehicles, specialized machinery, or water control equipment.
- Competencies needed for the position:
- Physical Effort: Works from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where areas are hard to reach. Work requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing and may be performed in cramped positions, under equipment, structures, etc. Frequently required to lift and carry parts and items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Working Conditions: Work is performed outside in extremes of weather or inside shop and other buildings. Work involves walking and climbing steps, slopes and uneven surfaces. There is danger of injury such as cuts, burns, electrical shock and bruises while use of power tools and welding equipment. Strains from lifting or work in awkward positions, and danger of drowning while working in proximity of the water.
- CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- This position is covered by the civilian drug abuse testing program. Pre employment drug test required and continued participation in the program.
- Annual physical is required as well as a pre employment physical.
- Must obtain/maintain valid state operators license for vehicles.
- Heavy lifting is required. May be required to lift up to 50lbs alone and 100 lbs assisted. Incumbent must be able to perform all physical requirements of this position.
- May be required to obtain and maintain all Corps of Engineers licenses associated with position. The Government has a Licensing Program which includes, but is not limited to Dump Truck, Truck and Trailer, Crane, Forklift and construction equipment.
- Appropriate uniform must be worn where required, IAW EP1130-2-520 Ch 7
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain a current Corps of Engineers motorboat operator’s license including all requirements of the District Licensing Policy.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to perform duties of position issued by the state of residence.Where medical surveillance is required, incumbent must be able to pass all required physicals.
- Incumbent may be required to perform wildfire suppression duties.
- One-year probationary period may be required.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) VARIES depending on location and position, >25%.
- Appointment may be subject to suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

- Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.

- Nepotism: Under the provisions of 5 USC 3110, an individual may not be appointed into a position if the position is under the supervisory chain of command of a relative.
