  • Inspects and maintains storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins, and other drainage facilities.
  • Performs landscaping, grounds maintenance and park setup.
  • Cleans and maintains public area grounds and equipment.
  • Assists in tree planting, trimming and removal and park activities.
  • Keeps accurate records and reports as assigned.

Job description

The Department of Public Works provides quality development and maintenance of streets, sanitation, and parks for the City of Sheboygan and its residents. The Department of Public Works (DPW) facilitates safe and efficient delivery of essential goods and services, provides clean and beautiful public spaces that maximize the natural environment, and enhances the overall quality of life of residents. DPW strives to deliver professional, quality public service with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Maintenance Worker – Streets, Sanitation, & Sewer is an entry level position for DPW to expose and develop skills. Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled, skilled, and specialized labor including complex physical and mechanical tasks. Responsible for the operation and routine maintenance of trucks, equipment, and facilities (including parks) deemed necessary by the supervisor for the successful operation of the department. Employees must be available for emergency work 24/7 (i.e. for snow and/or storm activity). It is imperative job duties are performed with respect, integrity, objectivity and in the best interest of the City. All City employees are expected to be honest and truthful at all times.

  1. Performs semi-skilled and unskilled labor duties in the construction, repair, and maintenance of infrastructure and various activities under the authority of the Department of Public Works.

  2. Operates related equipment such as tractors, street sweeper, front-end loader, sewer jet & TV truck, roller, concrete saw, chipper, pumps, boilers, heating and ventilating systems, and drives all CDL level trucks in order to perform work deemed necessary.

  3. Collects garbage, refuse and trash and operates collection equipment.

  4. Performs safe and effective operation of plow trucks and wings and related snow and ice removal equipment and hauls sand, gravel, dirt, snow, salt, garbage, yard waste, materials and equipment deemed necessary.

  5. Participates in the inspection and maintenance of all storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins, manholes, culverts, other drainage related areas, and other public works projects.

  6. Performs landscaping, grounds maintenance and set-up at parks, cemetery and other public places.

  7. Cleans and maintains public area grounds and equipment.

  8. Assists in tree planting, trimming, and removal and park activities.

  9. Keeps accurate records and makes reports regarding duties as assigned

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements “ABCD” in good standing or the ability to obtain within three months of hire. Failure to obtain or maintain will result in termination of employment. (May be required to obtain a Class A based on Departmental needs)

  • Knowledge of the proper uses and techniques for using materials, equipment, and power and hand tools for ground maintenance, repair, construction and other departmental activities.

  • Must be capable of hard, physical labor with working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safe work practices involved in the operations of the Department of Public Works.

  • Must be available for emergency operations.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Knowledge of basic mathematical principles.

Work Environment:

Above average physical strength and stamina is required while performing the duties of this job. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, reach, lift and handle materials which may range from 50 -75 pounds for sustained periods. Also requires the ability to perform tasks related to repetitive motions with the use of the hands, legs, and back. The employee frequently is required to work outdoors in all climatic conditions. Possibility for some exposure, however, appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required. The employee is occasionally required to work evenings and long hours and be able to respond to call-ins after normal hours.
