Position Summary: Under general supervision, this position exists to perform a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled street maintenance and repair duties for the City of Canon City.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities*: The essential duties and responsibilities listed below are central to the job or are the reason the position exists, and the employee must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.   • Assists with street patching, crack filling, street construction, bridge repair, concrete removal, dirt removal, curb/gutter/sidewalk construction, road grading, right-of-way maintenance, cleaning ditches, culvert maintenance, material hauling, de-icing, and snow plowing.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance and minor repairs on tools and equipment, including cleaning.
  • Performs related maintenance duties such as clearing brush, controlling weeds, pruning trees and shrubs, removing litter and trash, concrete work, and sweeping streets and gutters as required.
  • Answers questions from the public regarding streets.
  • Performs traffic control in and around work zones.
  • Provides excellent customer service to external and internal customers including but not limited to effectively listening and communicating, providing accurate information, offering solutions, assisting in resolution, and ensuring timely follow up as needed.

Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities*: The following duties, although not essential to the position, are important components to the smooth and efficient operation of the Division, Department, and City.

  • Some positions operate equipment such as snowplow, sand spreader, dump truck, and water truck.
  • Participates in on-call rotation for after-hours and weekends.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The essential and non-essential duties listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

  • The mission, policies, goals and procedures of Canon City relating to the Streets Division.
  • The practice and methods of street repair and maintenance.
  • The practice and repair of storm sewer repair and maintenance.
  • The practice and methods of traffic control for crews working in the streets and rights-of-way.
  • Safe use of hand tools and power tools such as cutters, chain saws, shovels, and rakes.
  • Material Safety Data Sheets for hazardous materials used in operations street maintenance operations.
  • Performing duties such as street patching, crack filling, street construction, concrete removal, curb/gutter/sidewalk construction, road grading, right-of-way maintenance, cleaning ditches, culvert maintenance, material hauling, de-icing, and snow plowing.
  • The safe use of tools and equipment such as rake, tamper, saw, cutter, hammer, concrete tools, grease gun, hand broom and shovel.
  • Performing traffic control duties in and around work zones.
  • Performing routine and preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment, including cleaning equipment.
  • Communicating verbally.
  • Establishing effective relationships with employees, government officials, news media representatives

Requirements

Minimum Qualification(s):

Experience

  • One (1) year of experience in construction, general laborer, agriculture, or related field.

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one within sixty (60) days of employment
  • Valid Colorado Class ‘A’ Commercial Driver’s License, with Tanker Endorsement, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months from date of hire. This deadline may be extended at the discretion of the Department Director.

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.

Preferred Qualification(s):

Experience

  • Two (2) years of experience in construction.
  • Two (2) years of experience in equipment operation.

Education

  • None

Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid Colorado Class ‘A’ Commercial Driver’s License, with Tanker Endorsement.
  • Flagger Certification.

Physical Activities:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee will travel within the City of Canon City and Fremont County

  • Physical demands of job require some lifting; pulling; carrying and pushing of objects – weighing as much as 100 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, simple grasping, finger/manual dexterity, standing, walking, twisting upper body, stooping, and hearing.
  • Occasional climbing of stairs.
  • Communicates verbally with City staff, outside agencies and the public in one-on-one settings, group settings and over the telephone.

Additional Information:

  • This position will typically work Monday – Friday but will flex to working weekends and evenings based on seasonal, organizational or event needs.
  • This position will be required to attend occasional City Council meetings and/or other meetings and events after normal work hours.
  • Travel within the City of Canon City and Fremont County will be required.
  • Frequent extension of workday to meet deadlines.

The City of Cañon City, as a recipient of federal grant funds, maintains a strict drug-free workplace policy. Although Marijuana and its derivatives, in some cases, are considered legal in the state of Colorado, they are still considered a Schedule I controlled substance under the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act (FDFWA), which makes there use, possession, or distribution illegal by City of Cañon City employees.
