This includes picking up litter, emptying trash receptacles, and replacing liners, as well as emptying and replacing liners in dog waste containers. The role requires the ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods in various weather conditions.
Lead Trash Collection Crew Member Responsibilities:- Leads a crew in the collection, loading, and disposal of trash and debris from Parks and Recreation facilities across the City of Burlington's Parks system.
- Clears areas around waste receptacles and picks up loose trash, ensuring parks are clean and safe for visitors.
- Replaces liners in trash receptacles and dog waste stations to maintain cleanliness.
- Dumps solid waste at the landfill on a daily or weekly basis.
- Assists in cleaning and maintaining trash collection trucks and equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Works safely and efficiently to maintain a secure environment for self and coworkers.
- Performs semi-skilled tasks as needed to assist in general park maintenance.
- Routinely inspects playground areas for hazards related to trash, litter, and debris during trash removal.
- Takes on additional duties as required to support park maintenance operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:- Occupational Hazards Awareness:Some knowledge of the potential hazards involved in working with traffic and handling garbage and refuse, ensuring safety during tasks.
- Municipal Park Setting Familiarity:Basic knowledge of working in an active municipal park environment, maintaining cleanliness and managing waste in public spaces.
- Tools and Equipment Proficiency:Basic experience using hand tools and some power tools to support maintenance and refuse collection activities effectively.
- Physical Stamina and Endurance:Ability to perform heavy manual labor consistently, working at a steady pace in varying weather conditions over extended periods.
- Driving and Equipment Operation:Capable of safely driving a large pickup truck with trash compactor, similar to an F550 series truck, to collect and dispose of waste.
- Teamwork and Independence:Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, contributing to group efforts with minimal supervision.
- Public Interaction and Customer Service:Ability to respond courteously and professionally to citizens if approached, ensuring positive community relations.
- Instruction and Task Compliance:Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and according to guidelines.
- Recordkeeping:Ability to complete simple records related to work activities, ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with department procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:- Previous experience working outdoors is required.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s License
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, feeling and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and pick up 50 pounds of weight without assistance.
Must possess visual acuity to operate a solid waste vehicle collecting garbage and refuse within a municipal park setting
