Job description

Job Title: Stormwater Maintenance Worker

This position performs maintenance and repairs of stormwater systems, treatment processes, retention ponds, mowing, illicit discharge inspections, and other Public Service projects. It works under general supervision, with some tasks potentially determined independently.

This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply.

Per Florida Statute 295.065, certain servicemembers and veterans, and their spouses and family members, receive preference and priority in employment, with some eligible for educational requirement waivers.

Responsibilities:
  1. Maintain and repair stormwater structures such as drains, catch basins, baffle boxes, and retention ponds.
  2. Perform preventive maintenance, respond to work orders, and document work activities.
  3. Inspect outfalls, drains, and catch basins for illicit discharges and report findings.
  4. Inspect businesses for compliance with illicit discharge regulations.
  5. Operate vehicles and heavy equipment, including backhoes, Vactor trucks, and sweepers, and use hand tools.
  6. Clean canals, lakes, and water retention areas; perform landscaping tasks such as mowing, trimming, and planting.
  7. Assist with general groundskeeping, clean-up operations, street sweeping, water sampling, signage, traffic control, and trash disposal.
  8. Transport materials and equipment, and run errands.
  9. Adhere to safety practices, use PPE, and be aware of occupational hazards.
  10. Complete records, reports, and attend training sessions.
  11. Participate in on-call rotations and emergency responses as needed.
  12. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two years of related experience, preferably in stormwater or construction.
  • Training in trench safety, fall protection, and confined space preferred.
  • Certifications in Stormwater Inspection and Traffic Control or willingness to obtain within one year.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License and Class B Commercial Driver’s Permit with endorsements within three months; obtain a full Class B License within six months.
  • FEMA certifications IS-100 and IS-700 within six months.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • Light to heavy physical work, lifting up to 80 pounds.
  • Frequent walking, standing, climbing, and bending.
  • Good dexterity, eyesight, hearing, and speech.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions, with exposure to construction hazards, chemicals, noise, and heights.
