Job summary

The City of Clemson is seeking a Maintenance Worker II in the Sanitation department. The role involves operating medium and heavy trucks, performing garbage collection, and maintaining equipment under supervision. Reports to a Public Works Supervisor.

  • Must have a valid South Carolina driver's license and commercial driver's license, or ability to obtain one within six months.

Responsibilities

  • Drives trucks and loads debris onto the truck; transports refuse to landfill.
  • Operates and maintains a range of trucks and heavy equipment safely.
  • Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance; reports defects to supervisor.
  • Maintains service records and performs on-call coverage as scheduled.
  • Performs manual labor tasks including loading, unloading, and servicing equipment as directed.

Job description

The City of Clemson is seeking to fill the position of Maintenance Worker II for the Sanitation department. This position, under regular supervision, operates and performs garbage collection on a variety of medium and heavy equipment trucks utilized in Sanitation activities. Reports to a Public Works Supervisor.

This position works: Monday - Thursday, 7:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Examples Of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
  • Drives truck and loads fallen tree limbs and roadside trash onto truck and delivers refuse to the landfill.
  • Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Operates heavy equipment and trucks under a variety of conditions performing required work tasks in a safe and effective manner.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Operates equipment and vehicles in a proper manner, in the performance of those tasks for which it was intended for use, and within established city safety policy.
  • Maintains records of areas serviced and addresses and items picked up for billing purposes.
  • Provides on-call duty coverage during non-working hours as per duty roster.
  • Performs manual labor which may include loading and unloading supplies and equipment, installing pipe and related equipment, shaping ditches, placing and grading stone and asphalt, gathering, loading, and disposing of debris, and any other labor-intensive tasks as required by the supervisor.
  • Receives written work orders or verbal instructions from the Public Works Supervisor or Public Works Director.
  • Drives truck and loads fallen tree limbs and stumps onto a truck and delivers refuse to landfill.
  • Repairs streets and sidewalks with asphalt, cold patching materials, and concrete, using a shovel, hand roller, trowel, level, and long-handled tamp.
  • Operates snow removal equipment to maintain streets, sidewalks, and driveways.
  • Hand washes vehicles.
  • Operates and/or uses a variety of equipment, tools, and supplies including power saws, shaving machines, spray gun, staple gun, wrench sets, clamps, roll carts, chipping machine, chain saw, weed eaters, pitchforks, brooms, rakes, leaf blower, motorized vehicles and equipment, including front loader truck, dump truck, pickup truck; saws, pumps, compressors, common hand and portable power tools, shovels, mobile radio, phone, riveting machines, blowtorch, chisels, soldering iron, air compressor, clips, fixtures, graphics instructions, manuals, patterns, rules, templates, backhoe, tractor, mower, edger, pruning shears, pressure sprayer, pressure washer, shovels, rakes, picks, sled hammer, trencher, concrete saw, etc.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent with two years experience involving the use of medium and heavy trucks and equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a valid South Carolina driver's license and commercial driver's license, or ability to obtain one within six (6) months.
