Job description

Under the direction of the Water & Sewer Division Superintendent, this individual is responsible for performing a variety of tasks in the maintenance, operation, repair, and construction of the City’s water, sanitary, and storm sewer systems. Snow plowing, salting and other winter storm duties are required for this position.Work assignments will include maintenance and repairs to the public water supply system including water main breaks, valve and hydrant repairs; maintenance and repairs of the sanitary and storm collection systems, including cleaning, debris removal and rebuilds of systems.

In addition, may be assigned to marking the locations of underground facilities, install and repair of water meters and other customer services such as water leaks, pressure loss, service outages, sewer backups, and area flooding.

Work involves use of technology including spreadsheets, email, GIS maps, and web applications on iPads and computers.The successful candidate must possess a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by specialized or technical training or shop courses; and/or experience performing maintenance, repair, and construction of public streets, public water supply distribution systems, and sewer collection systems, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills. Experience plowing snow is strongly desired.

Qualified applicants should also be able to demonstrate excellent customer service along with the ability to effectively solve problems and exercise good judgment with outstanding organizational and time management skills, and also be detail oriented with multi-tasking capabilities in a fast paced environment.

Knowledge of the safety precautions and hazards of the work. and the ability to perform manual labor for extended periods if time, in all weather conditions.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, ability to meet the physical requirements of the position, and the ability to learn a broad range of operational skills.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.

The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and must have the ability to operate heavy equipment, large vehicles, and power & hand tools used for maintenance, repair, and construction work. Must also have knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary to complete work safely.

Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. Weekend and/or night hours are required, for scheduled and emergency work such as water and sewer system repairs and snow/ice control activities. Must be willing and able to be on-call and respond to after-hours call-backs for emergency situations as necessary.

Applicant must possess, or have the ability to attain within six months of hire date, a valid Illinois Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B driver's license with No Restrictions (Full Air Brakes) and Tanker Endorsement. The City will provide the training necessary to obtain if needed.

Starting hourly rate is $27.91, pursuant to the City's Collective Bargaining Agreement, along with an excellent benefit package including health, dental and life insurance effective on your first day of employment, participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund pension, 10 paid holidays, and vacation and sick hours that are earned on a monthly basis.
