Job summary

The City of New Ulm is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform skilled and semi-skilled work in street, infrastructure, facilities, grounds, and equipment maintenance. You will support street and utility maintenance, stormwater and sewer systems, snow removal, cemetery operations, and equipment upkeep.

Responsibilities include maintaining roads, repairing pavements, preserving storm and sanitary systems, installing signs, maintaining grounds, winter operations, and basic carpentry and masonry

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Minimum three years of experience in construction trades, including asphalt, concrete, carpentry, or similar activities.
• Valid Class A CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements to be obtained within six months of hire.
• Subject to federal CDL drug and alcohol testing requirements.

Job description

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Public Works Superintendent, the Maintenance Worker performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and improvement of municipal streets, infrastructure, facilities, grounds, and equipment. This position supports a variety of public works operations, including street and utility maintenance, stormwater and sanitary sewer systems, snow and ice removal, grounds and tree care, cemetery operations, and equipment maintenance.

The Maintenance Worker is expected to perform assigned duties safely and efficiently, respond to emergency situations as needed, and help maintain the safety, functionality, appearance, and accessibility of City-owned property and infrastructure.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

• Perform routine, preventive, and emergency maintenance and repairs to asphalt, concrete, and gravel streets, alleys, and other paved and unpaved surfaces.
• Perform asphalt patching, concrete repair and replacement, grading, excavation, and other street maintenance activities.
• Maintain, inspect, clean, and repair stormwater and sanitary sewer systems, including associated structures and components.
• Install, maintain, straighten, replace, and repair street signs and related traffic-control devices to ensure proper visibility and compliance with safety requirements.
• Perform maintenance of City-owned trees, landscaped areas, rights-of-way, and other grounds, including pruning, planting, trimming, removal, mowing, and general upkeep.
• Perform winter maintenance operations, including plowing, salting, sanding, and removing snow and from streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and other City-owned areas.
• Assist with City cemetery operations and maintenance, including grounds upkeep and other duties associated with cemetery services.
• Operate, inspect, clean, and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment used in public works operations.
• Perform basic carpentry, masonry, and general facility maintenance and repair as assigned.
• Set up and maintain appropriate work-zone traffic control and follow applicable procedures when working in or near streets and rights-of-way.
• Follow established safety procedures, use required personal protective equipment, and promote a safe working environment for employees and the public.
• Participate in required safety, technical, and professional training and maintain licenses, certifications, and endorsements required by federal, state, and City regulations and policies.
• Maintain accurate records, reports, or inspection documentation as required.
• Communicate professionally and effectively with supervisors, co-workers, contractors, and members of the public.
• Respond to emergency call-outs, severe weather events, infrastructure failures, and other after-hours service needs as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA’s)

• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in street construction repair, and maintenance.
• Knowledge of asphalt, concrete, gravel, masonry, carpentry, mechanical repair, and general construction practices.
• General knowledge of municipal stormwater, sanitary sewer, drainage, and other public infrastructure systems.
• Knowledge of grounds maintenance practices, including the planting, pruning, trimming, and care of trees, shrubs, and other vegetation.
• Ability to safely operate light- and medium-duty trucks, construction equipment, snow-removal equipment, and other machinery used in public works operations.
• Ability to safely and effectively use hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment.
• Ability to inspect equipment, recognize maintenance or repair needs, and perform routine maintenance and minor mechanical repairs.
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, safety procedures, policies, maps, diagrams, and work assignments.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors for extended periods and in varying or adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and courteously.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience in construction trades or a closely related field, with experience in asphalt, concrete, carpentry, or similar public works activities.
• A valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required, with a tanker and air brake endorsement to be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
• This position is subject to federal CDL drug and alcohol testing requirements.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

Employees in this role are required to report to the Public Works Building within 30 minutes of receiving a call-out notice, regardless of weather or road conditions.
