The City of Apple Valley seeks a Maintenance Worker responsible for general cleaning, maintenance duties, and grounds upkeep at various facilities. This role involves working shifts and may require handling sensitive materials. The ideal candidate will possess a high school diploma and must have a valid Class B commercial driver's license.
Performs tasks requiring prior knowledge, skills and training, including but not limited to: providing general cleaning, repair and maintenance services, and grounds maintenance to the Central Maintenance Facility, Municipal Center, Law Enforcement Center and/or other City facilities as directed. Will have access to individual offices and restricted areas and may handle sensitive materials. Must be available for extended work days, call back, shift schedule changes, snow and ice control, and other emergencies.
Provides general maintenance and cleaning services as assigned to maintain an attractive, neat, and hygienic professional environment; including but not limited to: dusting, vacuuming, sweeping and washing floors, emptying waste baskets, washing windows, cleaning bathrooms, other general cleaning, stocking and replenishing sanitizing supplies such as hand sanitizer and surface cleaning wipes, minor repairs, moving of boxes and other items, and general maintenance services.
Maintains grounds by mowing, keeping grounds clean of debris and garbage, and maintaining a neat appearance.
Performs routine maintenance on cooling and heating systems. Includes maintaining a daily log for boiler and general monitoring of the heating boiler and pneumatic lines daily. Runs emergency generator as directed.
Sets up facility rooms and areas for scheduled meetings, including set-up of chairs, tables, and audiovisual equipment.
Monitors general maintenance supplies to ensure that correct products and quantities have been delivered. Sorts and delivers supplies to appropriate departments.
Provides general maintenance services as scheduled and directed through the Public Works Supervisor - Fleet/Building.
Assists with interoffice mail delivery and monitoring third party contractors performing building maintenance tasks as directed by the Public Works Supervisor – Fleet/Building.
Cleans employee break room on a daily basis, including appliances as needed. Brews coffee in break room. Maintains break room coffee and tea supplies. Maintains and cleans break room appliances and areas routinely as needed.
Stocks, maintains, and replenishes supply of bottled water for City meetings.
Maintains sidewalks and pathways to keep them clear of ice and snow by shoveling, operating snow removal equipment, sweeping, and/or salting.
Performs snow and ice control for the City, including but not limited to: operating snowplow equipment (plow truck, loader, and small equipment), and sanding and salting.
Performs other duties consistent with the tasks of the position as assigned by the City.
Minimum Requirements:
High school graduation or equivalent.
18 years of age or older.
Valid and unrestricted Class B commercial driver’s license and excellent driving record.
Special Boiler License, or must obtain within 6 months of appointment.
18 months of full-time experience working in a building maintenance position, or equivalent related experience as determined by the City.
Demonstrated ability to maintain and clean office areas, bathrooms, and public places.
Demonstrated skills in general construction, light electrical, and HVAC systems.
Ability to follow safe work practices according to law, City practices, and generally accepted safe work standards.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and high level of trust.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and be self-motivated to accomplish tasks and do good work.
Requires compliance with Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing requirements.
Must provide consent for criminal background check and fingerprinting due to work in secure locations and must receive acceptable results.
Promotion to Maintenance Worker II requires meeting the above qualifications and department head’s recommendation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Additional work experience maintaining and cleaning office areas, bathrooms, and public places.
Experience with a digital Building Automation System.
Experience performing snow and ice control for a facility.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Work is performed primarily indoors and outdoors based on work assignment.
Must be able to perform tasks requiring frequent bending, twisting, gripping, carrying, shoveling and lifting of up to 50 lbs. Some tasks require use of personal protective equipment such as respirators and gloves.
Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather.
