Job summary

The City of Rocky Mount is seeking a Cemetery Maintenance Assistant to perform unskilled and semiskilled maintenance in city cemeteries. You will assist with cleaning buildings, grounds and equipment, mowing, edging, pruning, and supporting funeral schedules on weekends.

Workdays are typically 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with weekend standby on a rotation basis. Prior outdoors maintenance experience and NC drivers license are preferred.

Qualifications

Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
Experience with outdoor maintenance work preferred
Possession of a valid NC driver1s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Ability to operate a farm-style tractor and dump trailer is preferred.

Responsibilities

Assist in cleaning of cemetery buildings, removing litter and debris and various landscaping activities to keep facilities neat and attractive.
Perform routine cleaning and maintenance on equipment to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
Promptly respond on weekends to assist in opening and closing graves according to funeral schedules.
Mow grass, edge curbs, and remove leaves; remove tree limbs and dead trees from cemeteries.
Operate mowers, blowers, edgers, and weed-eaters.
Assist with cleaning buildings, grounds and vehicles.
Assist with pruning shrubs and cutting undergrowth.
Assist with shoveling dirt.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Assist with routine pickup and delivery of supplies.

DEFINITION

HOURS OF OPERATION

7:30 A.M - 4:30 P.M. M-F (PLUS WEEKEND STANDBY, ROTATION SCHEDULE).

Ability to operate a farm-style tractor and dump trailer is preferred.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Crew and Cemetery Supervisor assign work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY

The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT

The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of City cemeteries. Success in this position contributes to a well-maintained City cemeteries, parks and facilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, stooping, standing, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, safety shoes, or gloves.
