Job summary

The Polk County Facilities Department has an opening for a Maintenance Worker. This position performs intermediate technical work that includes building maintenance, remodel projects, and semi-skilled repair of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, boilers & HVAC systems.

The Maintenance Worker also operates the building management system and door systems. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and moderate experience in building maintenance, boilers and construction or equivalent

Qualifications

  • Experience in repairing and maintaining water pipe fixtures, plumbing, and custodial work preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Remove snow and salt walkways as needed.
  • Perform building maintenance: painting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry; maintain heating and cooling systems.
  • Maintain daily log of time, equipment usage, and preventive maintenance; monitor boiler system.
  • Operate building management, life safety, and door systems.
  • Monitor inventory of supplies and materials.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Description

The Polk County Facilities Department has an opening for a Maintenance Worker. This position performs intermediate technical work that includes building maintenance, remodel projects, and semi-skilled repair of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, boilers & HVAC systems. The Maintenance Worker also operates the building management system and door systems.Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and moderate experience in building maintenance, boilers and construction or equivalent combination of education and experience. 1-2 years of experience in repairing & maintaining water pipe fixtures and other plumbing as well as upkeep of light commercial equipment and boilers as well as custodial work is preferred. A valid driver’s license is required. Summary
Essential Functions
  • Remove snow from building entrances and spread salt to icy spots on the walkways as needed.
  • Completes building maintenance by painting, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repair. Maintains heating and cooling system.
  • Maintains daily log by documenting time and equipment usage, and preventive maintenance information; includes checking the boiler system.
  • Operates building management, life safety, and door operation systems.
  • Monitors inventory of supplies and additional materials as needed.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge Required:

  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of commercial buildings, boilers, HVAC, and building management systems.
  • Knowledge of the use of basic hand and power tools.

Skills Required:

  • Skill in the operation of carpentry equipment shop tools, and plumber’s snake.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Communication: Interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, and the general public, etc.
  • Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision.

Skills Preferred:

  • 1 - 2 years of experience in repairing and maintaining water pipe fixtures and other plumbing used in residential or commercial industrial buildings, as well as the repair and upkeep of light commercial equipment and boilers.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in building maintenance, boilers, and construction, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non- weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electrical shock and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather); work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
