The City of Hayward is seeking a dependable Maintenance Worker to support public works construction and street maintenance. Under supervision, you will perform semi-skilled tasks, operate light equipment, and assist in sewer, curb, and road repairs.
A Class B license with Tanker Endorsement is required, with Class A possibly needed depending on assignment. Applicants should be able to work on streets and utilities, handle heavy physical labor, and follow safety procedures.

Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled duties in public works construction and maintenance activities; does related work as required. Positions assigned to this class involve a variety of semi-skilled tasks requiring a limited knowledge of street and sewer construction and maintenance activities. The duties assigned include physical labor and are frequently routine, but are more difficult or skilled than work performed by Laborers; work is normally performed under the supervision of supervisor or lead worker, however, Maintenance Workers may provide occasional working lead direction to other co-workers as assigned. The operation of various types of light automotive equipment as a regular assignment is characteristic of this class.
The ideal candidate is a dependable, safety-conscious, and self-motivated individual who can perform physically demanding manual labor and a variety of semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks. The successful candidate will have the ability to work on streets, sewers, utilities, and related infrastructure under the direction of a supervisor, manager, or senior staff. The candidate should demonstrate mechanical aptitude, sound judgment, and initiative while completing assignments safely and efficiently.
Experience with plumbing, piping materials, fittings, couplings, asphalt, concrete, and line striping is desirable. The ideal candidate will safely operate hand tools, power tools, light automotive equipment, and heavy equipment while following established safety procedures. The candidate will work effectively as part of a team, adapt to changing assignments, and provide working lead direction when assigned. A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License and continued DOT compliance are required.

Experience: One (1) year of experience in general construction or maintenance work involving the use of dump trucks, loaders, jackhammers or related power-driven equipment.
Education: Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade.
Licenses and Certificates: Possess and maintain a valid Class B Driver's License and Tanker Endorsement. Depending upon assignment, possession and maintenance of a Class A Driver's License may be required.
