Job summary

The City of Hayward is seeking a Maintenance Worker to support public works projects on streets and utilities. You will work under supervision, perform a range of semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks, and operate light equipment with safety as a priority.

Ideal candidates will have one year of relevant experience, a valid Class B CDL with Tanker Endorsement (Class A may be required), and the ability to perform physical labor in varied weather.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 1 year in general construction or maintenance involving dump trucks, loaders, jackhammers or related power-driven equipment.
  • Education: Completion of the eighth grade.
  • Licenses and Certificates: Valid Class B Driver's License and Tanker Endorsement; Class A may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform street repairs and reconstruction work on construction and maintenance crews.
  • Clean and repair sanitary sewers, storm drains, catch basins and related facilities.
  • Assist in repair and reconstruction of curbs, sidewalks, and gutters.
  • Operate trucks and light automotive construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Use power and manual hand tools safely and effectively.
  • Assist in installation or repair of traffic signs, barricades and fencing.
  • Assist in painting crosswalks, curbs and lane markings.
  • Perform heavy manual labor as necessary.

THE POSITION

Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled duties in public works construction and maintenance activities; does related work as required. Positions assigned to this class involve a variety of semi-skilled tasks requiring a limited knowledge of street and sewer construction and maintenance activities. The duties assigned include physical labor and are frequently routine, but are more difficult or skilled than work performed by Laborers; work is normally performed under the supervision of supervisor or lead worker, however, Maintenance Workers may provide occasional working lead direction to other co-workers as assigned. The operation of various types of light automotive equipment as a regular assignment is characteristic of this class.

YOU ARE

The ideal candidate is a dependable, safety-conscious, and self-motivated individual who can perform physically demanding manual labor and a variety of semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks. The successful candidate will have the ability to work on streets, sewers, utilities, and related infrastructure under the direction of a supervisor, manager, or senior staff. The candidate should demonstrate mechanical aptitude, sound judgment, and initiative while completing assignments safely and efficiently.

Experience with plumbing, piping materials, fittings, couplings, asphalt, concrete, and line striping is desirable. The ideal candidate will safely operate hand tools, power tools, light automotive equipment, and heavy equipment while following established safety procedures. The candidate will work effectively as part of a team, adapt to changing assignments, and provide working lead direction when assigned. A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License and continued DOT compliance are required.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  1. Works on construction and maintenance crews performing street repairs and reconstruction work.
  2. Cleans and performs repairs to sanitary sewers, storm drains, catch basins and related facilities.
  3. Assists in the repair and/or reconstruction of curbs, sidewalks, and gutters.
  4. Operates trucks and light automotive construction and maintenance equipment including loader rollers, root cutting equipment; rodding machines and flushers.
  5. Operates light power-drives equipment such as compressors, jackhammers, vibro-rollers and concrete saw in the performance of this work.
  6. Uses power and manual hand tools as required.
  7. Assists in the installation or repair of traffic signs, barricades, and fencing.
  8. Assists in the painting of crosswalks, curbs and traffic lane markings.
  9. Performs heavy physical labor as necessary in the course of these duties.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

You have: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: One (1) year of experience in general construction or maintenance work involving the use of dump trucks, loaders, jackhammers or related power-driven equipment.

Education: Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade.

Licenses and Certificates: Possess and maintain a valid Class B Driver's License and Tanker Endorsement. Depending upon assignment, possession and maintenance of a Class A Driver's License may be required.
