Job summary

Washington County Government is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform semi-skilled labor across facilities and grounds. Responsibilities include operating light trucks and grounds equipment, performing minor repairs, and assisting with carpentry, masonry, and plumbing tasks.

The role requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and at least three years of grounds maintenance and related trade experience. A Class-B CDL is required or obtainable within six months.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a semi-skilled laborer in one or more trades.
• Minimum of three (3) years groundskeeper and/or turf maintenance experience.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months, a Class-B Commercial Driver's License.

Responsibilities

• Assist with carpentry, masonry, and plumbing repairs.
• Perform painting assignments with minimal supervision.
• Safely operate small power tools and equipment.
• Operate snow plows and spreaders when required.
• Maintain county facilities and equipment.
• Set up meeting rooms and support site operations.
• May act as lead worker on housekeeping and minor repairs.
• Participate in training sessions as required.

JOB TITLE: Maintenance Worker

GRADE: 7

DEPARTMENT: Buildings, Grounds and Facilities

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Maintenance Leadworker

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

Semi-skilled laborer position requiring basic trade skills and responsible for, but is not limited to, operation of light trucks, grounds maintenance equipment, hand tools and/or power tools. Also responsible for general maintenance of County owned facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)

1. Assists other employees with carpentry, masonry, and plumbing repair assignments.
2. Carries out painting assignments with minimal supervision.
3. Safely operates small power tools and equipment.
4. Operates power (push) mowers, riding mowers, tractors, and snow throwers.
5. Performs basic maintenance and repair work of County-owned facilities and equipment.
6. Operates snow plows and spreaders, as required.
7. Arranges meeting rooms for use.
8. May occasionally act as lead worker in general housekeeping, maintenance, and minor repair assignments.
9. Participates in training sessions as required.
10. Performs related assignments as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

1. Basic skills in masonry, carpentry, plumbing repairs, and equipment operation.
2. Sound knowledge of proper turf maintenance for parks and playing fields.
3. Qualified to operate trucks, autos, tractors, and other equipment used for grounds maintenance.
4. Operates snowplows and spreaders.
5. Knowledge of hand and power tools, light duty equipment and techniques applicable to the particular area of assignment.
6. Ability to understand and follow instructions.
7. Ability to accept and comply with County policy.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a semi-skilled laborer in one or more trades gained through on-the-job training or technical school.
3. Minimum of three (3) years groundskeeper and/or turf maintenance experience.

A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and handling, pushing and pulling. Physically capable of performing heavy manual labor such as shoveling snow, etc. Ability to exert up to 150 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently. Frequently lifting, carrying and pushing/pulling of up to 80 lbs.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid Class-B Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
