Job summary

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Water Resources Division, Gathright Dam Project Office outside Covington, Virginia, seeks a Maintenance Worker to perform grounds maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, painting, and operate vehicles and vessels.

This is a developmental WG-5/7 position with potential to advance to WG-07. Responsibilities include dam and facility upkeep, general maintenance, and equipment operation.

Qualifications

• You will be evaluated on the ability to perform the work without close supervision.
• Operate, repair and maintain the dam and appurtenant structures and facilities.
• Operate and maintain a variety of vehicles and vessels (sedan, pickup, tractors, forklifts, motorboats).
• Demonstrate knowledge of materials, and use of measuring instruments and tools.
• Interpret instructions, specifications and blueprints when performing tasks.

Job description

About this position:

This position is assigned to the Water Resources Division, Operations Branch at the Gathright Dam Project Office outside Covington, Virginia and conducts maintenance duties to include grounds maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, painting, and vehicle/vessel operation. This is a developmental position. You may be selected at the WG-5 or WG-7 grade level at management discretion. Full Performance Level is WG-07.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element)

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Uses moderate physical effort to stack, load, unload, move and carry tools, equipment and materials ranging in weight from 10 lbs to 50 lbs unassisted. Occasionally lifts heavier objects with assistance (e.g., using a hand truck). Required to reach, walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally works in cramped quarters, or from ladders, scaffolds or platforms.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.) and usually in a dirty, dusty and/or greasy environment. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shocks, burns, cuts bruises, maimed fingers and scrapes. Occasionally is required to wear uncomfortable protective clothing.
