Job summary

US Army Corps of Engineers is seeking personnel to inspect, install, repair, and maintain equipment, facilities, and structures related to public use and water control. The role includes welding, irrigation planning, grounds maintenance, and operation of vehicles and heavy machinery.

Responsibilities cover carpentry, painting, and structural repairs, with work performed outdoors in various weather conditions. A shift-based schedule and a physical endurance component are expected.

Qualifications

  • Physical exertion: must be able to lift and move heavy objects, up to 50 pounds.
  • Outdoor work: duties performed outdoors in all weather and environmental conditions.
  • No specific formal education requirement; demonstrated ability and experience acceptable.

  • Inspect, install, repair, maintain, test, modify and adjust equipment, facilities and structures related to public use, project operations, water control, and utilities.
  • Perform gas and arc welding, metal fabrication, modification, repair, grinding and finishing.
  • Plan and maintain irrigation systems; repair water-borne and plumbing fixtures and water-control structures.
  • Conduct grounds maintenance at Recreational and Environmental Stewardship sites, including tree work and mowing.
  • Operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment (tractors, backhoe, boats, etc.) as required.
  • Carry out carpentry work and paint wood/metal surfaces and structures.

Job description

Duties
  • Inspects, installs, repairs, maintains, tests, modifies and adjusts equipment, facilities and structures related to public use, general project operations, water control, and utility systems.
  • Performs metal fabrication, modification and repair through gas and arc welding, grinding and finishing.
  • Performs irrigation system planning, installation, rehab and maintenance. Makes repairs to water-borne and vault toilets, drinking fountains, hydrants, lavatories, etc. and makes adjustments to water-control and flood-control structures.
  • Performs grounds maintenance tasks at Recreational and Environmental Stewardship sites, to include: tree planting and maintenance brush removal, tree felling and removal, and field mowing.
  • Operates motor vehicles, farm tractors with attachments, front-end loader, backhoe, boats and other equipment as required.
  • Performs carpentry repairs, modification or construction of concrete forms, steps, walls, storage racks and sign mounting framework etc. Paints a variety of wood and metal surfaces, metal structures and equipment.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A pre-employment drug test is required.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a state issued driver’s license.
  • A pre-employment physical is required.
  • Must obtain a US Army Corps of Engineers Motorboat Operator’s License within 12 months of employment.
  • This position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position requires the ability to lift heavy objects, up to 50 lbs.
  • The incumbent is subject to emergency work performed outside of normal duty hours.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element)
  • Physical Effort: Exerts heavy physical effort in doing such tasks as frequently lifting and moving objects weighing under 50 pounds unassisted, obtains assistance or uses appropriate equipment or safety devices when lifting and moving heavy objects greater than 45 pounds. Physical dexterity isneeded to handle tools and work around machinery or equipment.
  • Working Conditions: Work is generally performed outdoors in all extremes of weather, in and over water, in wildland vegetation, in flood control and building structures. Hazards include heat, cold, dust, insect bites and stings, injurious vegetation, electric shock, drowning, work around machinery and heavy equipment, noise, vibration, falls from ladders and high work surfaces, and toxic chemicals. Work requires heavy lifting, continuous standing, walking, or stooping in all extremes of weather, including under wet and muddy conditions on steep or uneven terrain. Work requires special care to avoid injuries.
