Job summary

Italian Home for Children is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform routine and preventive maintenance on campus buildings, grounds, and equipment. The role requires reliability, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently or with a team to complete projects on schedule.

Responsibilities include carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, and lawn care, plus pool maintenance familiarity. The position is on-site in Boston, MA with competitive hourly pay and benefits.

Qualifications

  • 1+ year of experience in facilities, building maintenance, or groundskeeping.
  • Valid United States driver’s license required.
  • Familiarity with swimming pool systems and maintenance preferred, but not required.

Job description

The Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing routine and preventive maintenance, repair, and general upkeep of campus buildings, grounds, mechanical equipment, and utility systems. This role supports the safe, efficient, and clean operation of all facilities and requires a reliable, flexible, and self‑motivated individual capable of completing projects independently and as part of a team.The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of duties and responsibilities that will be required of positions given this title. Employees may be requested to perform tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.Perform routine and preventative maintenance on building systems, fixtures, and mechanical equipmentConduct light carpentry work including minor repairs, installations, and adjustmentsComplete basic plumbing tasks such as fixing leaks, clearing drains, and replacing fixturesCarry out light electrical work including replacing switches, outlets, lighting, and troubleshooting minor issuesPerform painting, patching, wall repairs, and flooring touch-ups as neededAssist with swimming pool maintenance, including water testing, treatment, and equipment upkeepMaintain campus grounds including landscaping, mowing, trimming, leaf removal, and seasonal plant careProvide snow removal and ice management, including shoveling, salting, and use of snow-removal equipmentSupport trash and recycling removal across buildings and grounds; collaborate with housekeeping for waste collection needsMonitor and maintain facility utility systems, reporting issues promptlySafely operate hand tools, power tools, grounds equipment, and maintenance machineryConduct routine inspections of facilities and equipment and document findingsAssist other departments as needed, especially housekeeping, during high‑volume or urgent situationsCommunicate work progress, issues, and completed tasks clearly to supervisorsDemonstrate and ensure all interactions between coworkers as well as all interactions in the presence of clients are appropriate, respectful, and in line with all training principlesClimb ladders and work at various heights safelyBend, kneel, reach, twist, and work in confined or awkward spacesLift and carry 100 lbs unassisted, and up to 150 lbs with assistancePerform tasks requiring prolonged standing, walking, and manual dexterityWork indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditionsDemonstrated ability to perform general building, mechanical, and grounds maintenanceBasic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, and landscapingStrong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot routine issues independentlyReliable, flexible, and highly self-motivated with a commitment to completing projects thoroughly and on timeAbility to follow safety procedures and operate tools and equipment safelyEffective communication and teamwork skills1+ year of experience in a facilities, building maintenance, or groundskeeping roleValid United States driver’s license requiredFamiliarity with swimming pool systems and maintenance preferred, but not requiredOther tasks as assignedItalian Home for Children is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace.
