These positions are located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Facilities-Repair & Renovation Unit in Beltsville, MD.
In these positions, you will be responsible for performing a variety of duties involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, related structures, and utilities.
Duties
- Inspect, maintain, and repair water, sewer, air, gas, vacuum and heating systems, including some steam and hot water systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs such as replacing belts, motors, cleaning coils, valve replacement and filter replacement for various HVAC systems.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair bad switches, relays and outlets by unscrewing or cutting wiring from connections, inserting the replacement, and splicing, tightening and soldering wiring to connects.
- Build and repair wooden building structures such as porches, doors, windows, screens.
- Measure, cut, and thread lengths of pipe by hand or power machine.
- Use hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, hand and power drills.
- Perform general carpentry work by measuring, cutting and installing wood, wood products, and related construction materials such as lumber, sheeting, flooring, framing, or plywood.
- Apply shop mathematics (add, subtract, multiply, divide, and work with simple fractions) and applications.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
- Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

Qualifications
In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 07/06/2023. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Physical EffortWorks from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms at heights up to 60 feet, and where the surfaces, systems and equipment worked on may be in cramped or hard-to-reach places. Required to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and generally work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, handles, carries, and sets up materials, parts and/or equipment that may way up to 90 pounds (using equipment or hand trucks/ forklifts for the safe handling).
Working ConditionsWork is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Outside work often exposes the incumbent to adverse weather conditions, such as extreme heat, cold, and rain. The incumbent is subject to the usual hazards associated with conducting maintenance work. Work is performed in ducts, chases, tunnels, attic crawl spaces, and sometimes under extremes of temperature. The incumbent is subject to danger of falling from ladders, scaffolds, and through floor openings, and is subject to cuts, bruises, punctures, burns, scalds, shock, dust dirt, noise and hazards of falling objects. In addition, the incumbent is subject to exposure to paint fumes and irritation of eyes, skin, and respiratory tract from sanding and dusting surfaces.
