Hours of Work: Monday – Friday; Typical Business Hours. May be required to be on-call, including occasional evenings and weekends.

PRIMARY FUNCTION


The Maintenance Technician II is responsible for preserving the good condition and functionality of YWCA Kalamazoo residential and commercial facilities. This role performs a range of routine and corrective maintenance tasks—including basic electrical, plumbing, HVAC support, landscaping, and carpentry—with increasing independence. The position requires a practical, detail-oriented approach to maintaining buildings and common areas in safe, functional condition.


QUALIFICATIONS


  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required; certificate in HVAC, building maintenance technology, or relevant field is preferred.
  • Minimum 1–3 years of professional experience as a maintenance technician or in a related role required.
  • Basic understanding of electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and carpentry systems.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance processes and methods in commercial and residential.
  • Working knowledge of tools, common appliances, and devices.
  • Manual dexterity, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work with increasing independence.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. and perform physical tasks including standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel to YWCA locations.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn job-related software.
  • Ability to interpret written, verbal, diagram, and schedule-based instructions.
  • Must pass criminal, child abuse and neglect, and sex offender background checks.

RESPONSIBILITIES


Facility Maintenance & Repair


  • Perform routine, preventative, and corrective maintenance across YWCA residential and commercial facilities.
  • Conduct building surveys and repairs to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems (replace bulbs and sockets, clean and repair circuit breaker panels).
  • Assist with HVAC system setup, ventilation, refrigeration, and conduct basic repairs as needed.
  • Maintain heating and plumbing systems to ensure functionality.
  • Perform carpentry and general repairs (fix locks, repair drywall, hang fixtures, build and assemble furniture).
  • Install and maintain equipment, appliances, and building fixtures.

Safety, Inspection & Compliance


  • Inspect alarm and fire safety systems; notify supervisor when repairs are needed.
  • Follow all OSHA standards, YWCA safety policies, and required reporting protocols.
  • Report hazardous conditions or equipment failures promptly.

Groundskeeping & Environmental Maintenance


  • Conduct general upkeep procedures including landscaping, snow removal, and debris cleanup.
  • Maintain building exteriors, parking lots, walkways, and outdoor program spaces.

Organizational Responsibilities


  • Complete work orders accurately and within required timeframes.
  • Attend team meetings, required trainings, and organizational events.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Represent the YWCA positively in all interactions.
  • May perform building cleaning duties when assigned staff is on leave.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Work occurs at YWCA locations, off-site locations, and occasional outdoor events.
  • Physical activities include sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, balancing, stooping, crawling, and frequent movement.
  • Regular use of hand and finger dexterity; continual talking and hearing.
  • Lifting requirements: frequently up to 40 lbs.; occasionally over 60 lbs.
  • Occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals, bloodborne or airborne pathogens, outdoor weather, and extreme temperatures.
  • Work may take place in high or elevated areas; noise levels typically quiet to moderate.
  • Vision requirements include: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Equipment used may include personal vehicles, laptop, and work cell phone.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS


  • Orientation to YWCA Personnel Policies, Mission, Purpose, and Core Values.
  • Orientation to Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Confidentiality, and Mandatory Reporting.
  • Basic maintenance, safety and tools orientation.
  • Other appropriate training and in-service which will occur during employment.
