Position Summary (Primary Function)
This position performs basic routine repair, maintenance, preventative maintenance, landscaping, and general upkeep tasks in the Maintenance Department at Asheville Regional Airport. Assists maintenance technicians with facility and grounds needs to ensure the airport remains safe, operational, and well-maintained. Work processes are generally well established, but some independent judgment is required in prioritizing tasks and completing assignments.
Position Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
- Performs basic routine repair, maintenance, preventative maintenance, and landscaping to support the daily operation and maintenance of the airport facilities.
- Supports maintenance staff with departmental projects and follow daily/weekly work assignments.
- Assists with basic building maintenance such as painting, light carpentry, minor repairs, and cleaning.
- Performs grounds and parking lot upkeep, including trash/debris removal, pressure washing, sweeping, mowing, trimming, and snow/ice removal.
- Operates and maintains equipment such as sweepers, pressure washers, mowers, blowers, snow blowers, and small tractors.
- Washes and cleans equipment and workspaces, performs light servicing, and ensures tools are kept in good working condition to maintain a safe and clean working environment.
- Complies with all applicable OSHA and EPA regulations within the area of responsibility, and assures control and proper disposal of hazardous chemicals, substances, and wastes as required.
- Is a member of the snow team and works extended snow/ice removal events including nights, weekends, and holidays to keep all roadways, sidewalks, pedestrian areas, as well as the runway, taxiways, and ramp areas clear of snow/ice, and in compliance with FAA Part 139 standards.
- Maintains current knowledge of the Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority (GARAA) policies, directives, regulations, and safety procedures.
- Works from daily and/or weekly work plans approved by supervisor.
- Ready to assist with duties of all maintenance employees and other departmental needs and tasks.
- Participates in special events, emergencies, and irregular operations, as needed.
- Other duties, as needed and assigned.
Education Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
Experience Requirements
- Six (6) months of experience in general maintenance or landscaping, preferred.
- This position requires 3-6 months experience (not necessarily consecutive) to become proficient in all aspects of the job, and to learn seasonal requirements of the position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of general maintenance practices.
- Knowledge of landscaping, cleaning, and grounds maintenance practices.
- Knowledge of all safety precautions, occupational hazards, and related safety precautions necessary to operate equipment.
- Knowledge of federal regulations including Federal Aviation Regulation Part 139, Transportation Security Regulations Part 1542.
- Knowledge of snow removal methods as mandated by the FAA.
- Basic knowledge of landscaping, cleaning, and ground maintenance practices.
- Basic knowledge of high voltage work.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Skills in operation, service, use, and care of equipment used in this position such as but not limited to sweepers, pressure washers, small tractors, forklift, snow removal equipment, etc.
- Skills to communicate effectively orally and in writing, follow instructions, and complete assigned tasks with attention to detail.
- Basic computer skills for reporting, communication, and work assignments and tracking.
- Ability to detect broken or worn parts, perform minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and ensures that maintenance equipment is used only within the limits of the manufacturer.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, airport tenants, federal partners, co-workers and the public, and represent the airport in a positive and professional manner.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as effectively in a team environment.
Physical requirements
- Works in a combination of inside and outside environments and spends about 75% of the time sitting, standing, and walking.
- Must be able to perform essential physical functions that require frequent bending, twisting, stooping, balancing, kneeling, turning, crouching, crawling, lifting, grasping and repetitive motions.
- Requires frequent bending, twisting, stooping or turning.
- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally; and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently; and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
- Subject to environmental conditions such as extreme hot and cold weather.
- Must be able to operate and monitor communications equipment, such as data terminals, computers, radios and telephones.
- Must be able to climb and descend stairs, perform inspections on foot and in a vehicle, operate various features of the landside facilities, including snow removal equipment, tractors, lighting, security gates, heavy equipment, painting equipment, etc.
- May be exposed to chemicals, fumes, solvents, machinery, moving objects/vehicles, dust, slippery/uneven surfaces, narrow passageways and excessive noise.

Licenses/Certifications Required
- Valid driver license required.
- Forklift operators certification or ability to obtain.
- Commercial Drivers License, preferred.

- The Maintenance Supervisor establishes workflow for the position, but some judgement is necessary in prioritizing tasks and completing assignments.
- Diligence must be exercised when handling confidential information.
- Reasonable care for equipment/process will prevent injury/damage.
- Responsible for own work, but must coordinate work with others.
