Job description

SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled work in a variety of tasks related to the construction, repairs, and maintenance of city water distribution and wastewater collection systems. The ideal candidate will embody our core values of service, humility, innovation, neighborliness, and excellence (SHINE).

Starting salary will be between $18.42/hr and $25.59/hr.

Hiring ranges:

  • Maintenance Technician I: $18.42 - $22.10/hr
  • Maintenance Technician II: $20.31 - $24.37/hr
  • Maintenance Technician III: $21.32 - $25.59/hr
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Performs utility maintenance by:

  • Monitoring chlorine residuals
  • Collecting bacteriological samples
  • Inspecting manholes and cleanouts
  • Jetting and cleaning sewer mains
  • Performing cleanup duties after sanitary sewer overflows
  • Setting up and removing barricades and traffic cones
  • Marking, digging, cutting, and repairing lines
  • Operating various equipment under guidance
  • Operating valves, fire hydrants, and other utility appurtenances
  • Documenting all work completed

Identifies and repairs damage to water systems:

  • Completing leak surveys
  • Operating motor vehicles and observing utility systems
  • Operating light and heavy equipment under supervision
  • Retrieving equipment and tools from trucks
  • Documenting work completed

Repairs damage to wastewater systems:

  • Video inspections of wastewater systems and laterals
  • Operating vehicles and equipment
  • Documenting work

Maintains pump stations and lift stations:

  • Grounds maintenance
  • Inspecting pumps and control valves
  • Repairing leaks
  • Performing pump maintenance
  • Inspecting wet wells and adjusting floats
  • Documenting actions

Assists other departments:

  • Providing maintenance support
  • Completing irrigation repairs and signage activities
  • Supporting special projects
  • Setting up work areas
  • Performing related duties as needed
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards, and precautions
  • Knowledge of construction and maintenance techniques
  • Knowledge of traffic control techniques
  • Knowledge of safe work methods
  • Skill in using tools and equipment

Education, Experience, and Certification Requirements:
Maintenance Technician I:

High school diploma/GED + 1 year general labor experience. Equivalent education, training, and experience may be considered.

Must possess a valid Texas Driver License at hire. Employees must obtain a Texas CDL, Class B or higher, within 12 months.

Maintenance Technician II:

High school diploma/GED + 2+ years specialized experience. Valid Texas CDL, Class B, at hire or progression. Water/Wastewater licenses required within 12 months if applicable.

Maintenance Technician III:

High school diploma/GED + 5+ years specialized experience. Valid Texas CDL, Class B. Multiple licenses may be required depending on division.

Environmental and Physical Factors:
  • Outdoor work environment
  • Physical activity including lifting up to 100 lbs
  • Potential exposure to machinery, chemicals, and infectious diseases
Equipment and Tools:

Includes city vehicles, backhoes, dump trucks, jet trucks, tractors, mowers, hand tools, and construction equipment.
