Job summary

Cameron County is seeking a Maintenance Technician I to perform routine maintenance and repair tasks on county facilities and grounds. Responsibilities include basic electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work, equipment repairs, and ensuring safe operation of power tools.

Qualifications

  • Assembles and repairs pipes, fixtures of heating, water and sewer systems; unblocks drains.
  • Assists maintenance staff and uses power tools safely.
  • Maintains tools and machinery; may operate heavy equipment.
  • Keeps buildings and work areas clean; prepares gear for work orders.
  • Performs repairs on county facilities, restrooms, and mechanical equipment.
  • Performs landscaping duties as requested.

MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I

PAY PLAN: 107 - $ 29,926.00 minimum salary

Purpose of Classification

Performs technical work in repair and/or building maintenance function. Duties include maintaining existing structures and grounds. Positions in this class perform routine maintenance and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer maintenance questions; and maintain repair documents and records.

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Repairs a/c malfunctions and installs new equipment.
  • Repairs electrical malfunctions and installs new equipment.
  • Assembles, installs and repairs pipes, fillings, fixtures of heating, water and sewer systems; opens clogged drains.
  • Assists maintenance personnel with problems and ensures timely completion of work; works with power tools in a safe manner.
  • Maintains tools and machinery in good condition and uses all tools carefully and as instructed; may be expected to operate heavy equipment on occasion.
  • Maintains buildings and keeps work areas clean; prepares equipment needed to complete work orders.
  • Performs repairs on all facilities within the County, including restrooms and mechanical equipment.
  • Maintains grounds: Performs landscaping duties as requested.

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED, with two (2) years of experience as a Maintenance Technician or semi-skilled position, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.

Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight (20-50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard or work station.

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors

Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Exposure to damp/wet surfaces, duty conditions, fumes and odors, flammable liquids and high noise levels.

This position is subject to a six (6) month probationary period prior to Civil Service eligibility. Must submit to a drug and alcohol evaluation.
