Position Summary
The Maintenance Technician I performs preventative maintenance, repairs, custodial services, and general facility upkeep for all Jackson Hinds Library System locations. This position helps ensure library buildings, grounds, equipment, and vehicles remain safe, clean, and operational. The technician works independently throughout the system, responds to routine and emergency maintenance needs, and performs janitorial duties as necessary.
Facility Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform preventative maintenance and routine inspections of library facilities.
- Complete minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, drywall, and general building repairs.
- Install, assemble, repair, and relocate furniture, shelving, fixtures, and equipment.
- Report facility concerns and maintain records of completed work.
Custodial & Facility Upkeep
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, offices, public areas, break rooms, and other library spaces.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, strip, wax, and buff floors.
- Empty trash, restock supplies, clean windows, and maintain a safe, professional environment.
- Safely use and maintain cleaning chemicals, custodial equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
Grounds, Vehicles & System Support
- Maintain library grounds and assist with facility moves and special projects.
- Travel to all library locations to perform maintenance and custodial services.
- Operate and maintain library-owned vehicles and equipment.
- Respond to emergency maintenance issues, weather-related events, and other operational needs.
General Support
- Follow all library safety policies.
- Interact professionally with staff, vendors, contractors, and the public.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience in facilities maintenance, custodial work, construction, or a related field preferred.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
- Ability to travel between all Jackson Hinds Library System locations.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of general building maintenance and custodial practices.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and facility repair.
- Ability to safely operate tools, equipment, and maintenance vehicles.
- Ability to prioritize work, solve routine maintenance problems, and work independently.
- Ability to communicate effectively and provide professional customer service.

- Work in confined spaces and perform physically demanding tasks throughout the workday.
The employee must be able to:
- Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds independently and occasionally more with assistance.
