Job summary

Roanoke County is seeking a skilled maintenance professional to support the Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection. You will perform building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting tasks and supervise volunteers as needed.

Role requires five years of maintenance experience, a Virginia driver's license, and the ability to work varied shifts, including nights/weekends, to keep facilities safe and compliant.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with trade or technical training in electricity/HVAC, or equivalent experience.
• Five+ years in maintenance or related experience with building systems.
• Valid Virginia driver’s license with a good driving record.

Responsibilities

• Perform skilled maintenance across building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting areas.
• Repair or replace mechanical equipment, plumbing fixtures, and electrical devices.
• Install and repair doors, windows, trims, and locks; paint interior/exterior surfaces.
• Purchase or bid maintenance materials and maintain store room.
• Maintain monthly work logs and provide quality customer service.
• Transport animals to appointments and maintain RCACP vehicles.
• Work varied shifts including nights and weekends as needed.

Job description

Performs a variety of skilled maintenance tasks on building systems, components and equipment including skilled maintenance work in the areas of building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting. Responsible for the daily general maintenance and operation of all building related systems and components. Provides direction and reviews work performed by contractors as required. Work is performed at the Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection.

• Performs mechanical, plumbing, electrical, painting, and carpentry tasks.
• Repairs or replaces mechanical equipment.
• Repairs or replaces plumbing fixtures.
• Repairs or replaces electrical devices such as switches, receptacles, ballast, motors, and light fixtures.
• Installs, repairs, and replaces doors, windows, trim, and locks.
• Paints interiors and exteriors of buildings.
• Purchases and or receives bids for maintenance materials and supplies, and performs associated paper work.
• Maintains and stocks store room.
• Performs building cleaning if needed.
• Performs kennel cleaning if needed.
• Performs a variety of other routine maintenance tasks.
• Maintains monthly work logs.
• Attends safety meetings as assigned.
• Provides quality customer service.
• Transports animals to appointments if needed.
• Maintains vehicles assigned to RCACP.
• Works varied shifts including nights and weekends as assigned to perform critical maintenance functions.

Education:

Required: High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by trade or technical school courses in Electricity and HVAC and/or OR demonstrated experience and qualifications necessary for the position.

Experience:

Required: Five (5) or more years of experience in maintenance field OR demonstrated experience and qualifications necessary for the position.

Certifications/Licenses:

Required: Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of methods, materials, procedures, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of buildings. Good knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, painting, mechanical, and electrical trades. Knowledge of personal computers and operation systems for Building automation. Ability to interface well with other technical staff, as well as interacting with vendors, contract personnel, and suppliers is essential. Ability to adapt to change where daily activities often change due to customer needs, building emergencies, or requests from management. Ability to safely handle and use common hand and power tools used in building and equipment maintenance work. Ability to work and complete assigned projects with a minimum of supervision. Ability to understand and follow instructions regarding safety practices including the use of equipment and material supplied by the County, to follow oral instructions and read and follow written instructions. Ability to work around animals.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Provide oversight to volunteers and Roanoke County Inmates.

Additional Requirements:

Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results. Must maintain a neat professional appearance consistent with company policy. Must be inoculated for tetanus. Due to the nature of this role, candidates must have a current rabies vaccination or be willing to obtain one upon hire at no cost, as mandated by Roanoke County.
