Job summary

Stark State College Akron is seeking a Maintenance Technician to keep facilities safe, reliable, and ready for daily teaching and operations. This hands-on role handles plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and basic HVAC, performing preventive checks and coordinating with vendors.

Typical hours are Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., with an hourly rate of $20.15–$26.19 depending on experience. A high school diploma or GED and a valid Ohio driver’s license are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 2 years of skilled work experience in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or related fields.
• Valid Ohio driver's license with satisfactory MVR check.
• Formal technical training preferred (vocational school, college courses, or a maintenance apprenticeship).

Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair, and replace plumbing infrastructure and fixtures.
• Troubleshoot and service electrical equipment and lighting systems.
• Perform carpentry, drywall, painting, and remodeling work.
• Service HVAC systems, including thermostats and air handlers.
• Coordinate with vendors to source parts and supplies.
• Provide campus ground and custodial support as needed.
• Conduct preventative maintenance inspections using blueprints and specs.

Job description

The Maintenance Technician role her at Start State College Akron ensures facilities are safe, reliable, and ready to support teaching, learning, and daily operations at our Akron Campus location. Under general supervision, this hands-on role handles the upkeep, repair, and routine maintenance of a facility's physical structure and mechanical systems. The worker troubleshoots and fixes issues across multiple trades—including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and basic HVAC—while performing regular preventative checks. They also manage minor remodeling projects, operate repair tools, and coordinate with vendors to order necessary supplies to ensure the building operates safely and efficiently.

Typical Hours of Work: Monday - Friday, 7:30a.m. - 4:00p.m., please note this is an hourly role, consisting of five - 8 hour days worked.

Hourly Rate: $20.15 to $26.19/hour, commensurate on experience.

Location: Stark State Akron, and Akron CDL, may work on Main Campus, North Canton, and as needed.

Typical Responsibilities Include:

• Maintain, repair, and replace plumbing infrastructure, including water/sewage lines, sinks, fountains, toilets, and various pipe materials.
• Troubleshoot and service electrical equipment, including ballasts, outlets, breakers, conduit bending, lighting systems, and low-voltage wiring.
• Execute carpentry, structural repairs, and painting for doors, windows, flooring, walls, ceiling tiles, roofs, and furniture.
• Perform full-scale remodeling work, including wall framing, drywall hanging and finishing, and wallpaper installation.
• Service and maintain HVAC systems, including thermostats, air conditioners, air handlers, heaters, motor belts, and air compressors.
• Conduct preventative maintenance inspections using technical orders, blueprints, and specifications to identify and report needed repairs.
• Manage vendor communications and logistics to source, order, and track required maintenance parts and building supplies.
• Provide facility support and ground operations, including custodial work, shipping/receiving, snow removal, and driving vehicles for personnel or materials.

To be Considered You'll Need:

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
• Minimum 2 years of skilled work experience in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, heating/air conditioning, or a combination of these fields is required.
• Must have a current, Valid Ohio driver's license with a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check.
• Formal technical training preferred, such as vocational school, business school, relevant college courses, or a general maintenance apprenticeship.
