Stark State College is hiring a Maintenance Technician to keep our Main Campus in North Canton and other locations safe and operational. The role covers plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, HVAC, and preventive maintenance, with vendor coordination and basic remodeling tasks.

The position is hourly, with four 10-hour days (Mon-Thu). Location spans North Canton, Stark State Akron, and other Canton/Akron sites. Strong hands-on skills and reliability are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum 2 years of skilled work in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or related fields.
• Valid Ohio driver’s license with satisfactory MVR check.
• Formal technical training preferred (vocational school, college courses, or apprenticeship).

Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair, and replace plumbing infrastructure (sinks, toilets, pipes).
• Troubleshoot electrical equipment, lighting, and wiring.
• Perform carpentry, painting, and basic remodeling work.
• Service and maintain HVAC systems and controls.
• Conduct preventive maintenance inspections per orders/blueprints.
• Coordinate with vendors to source parts and supplies.
• Support campus operations including custodial duties and logistics.

Job description

The Maintenance Technician role her at Start State College (Main Campus - North Canton) ensures facilities are safe, reliable, and ready to support teaching, learning, and daily operations. Under general supervision, this hands-on role handles the upkeep, repair, and routine maintenance of a facility's physical structure and mechanical systems. The worker troubleshoots and fixes issues across multiple trades—including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and basic HVAC—while performing regular preventative checks. They also manage minor remodeling projects, operate repair tools, and coordinate with vendors to order necessary supplies to ensure the building operates safely and efficiently.

Typical Hours of Work: Mon - Thur, 12:00p.m. - 10p.m., please note this is an hourly role, consisting of four - 10 hour days worked.

Hourly Rate: $20.15 to $26.19/hour, commensurate on experience.

Location: Main Campus, North Canton, and as needed on other campuses including Stark State Akron, and other Canton/Akron bound ancillary locations.

Typical Responsibilities Include:

• Maintain, repair, and replace plumbing infrastructure, including water/sewage lines, sinks, fountains, toilets, and various pipe materials.
• Troubleshoot and service electrical equipment, including ballasts, outlets, breakers, conduit bending, lighting systems, and low-voltage wiring.
• Execute carpentry, structural repairs, and painting for doors, windows, flooring, walls, ceiling tiles, roofs, and furniture.
• Perform full-scale remodeling work, including wall framing, drywall hanging and finishing, and wallpaper installation.
• Service and maintain HVAC systems, including thermostats, air conditioners, air handlers, heaters, motor belts, and air compressors.
• Conduct preventative maintenance inspections using technical orders, blueprints, and specifications to identify and report needed repairs.
• Manage vendor communications and logistics to source, order, and track required maintenance parts and building supplies.
• Provide facility support and ground operations, including custodial work, shipping/receiving, snow removal, and driving vehicles for personnel or materials.

To be Considered You'll Need:

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
• Minimum 2 years of skilled work experience in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, heating/air conditioning, or a combination of these fields is required.
• Must have a current, Valid Ohio driver's license with a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check.
• Formal technical training preferred, such as vocational school, business school, relevant college courses, or a general maintenance apprenticeship.
