Job summary

IPPL is seeking a Maintenance Technician in Summerville, SC to provide hands-on support for safety, functionality, and habitat upkeep at the sanctuary. The role reports to the Maintenance Lead and involves daily repairs, grounds work, and project collaboration with animal care staff.

Responsibilities include routine and emergency repairs across electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and painting, plus habitat refurbishment and safety compliance. Weekend work and on-call may be required.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency with power tools and industrial equipment used in maintenance tasks.
  • Strong problem solving and out-of-the-box thinking for troubleshooting.
  • High attention to detail and situational awareness regarding safety, security, and animal presence.
  • Reliable, calm, and focused under varying conditions and emergencies.
  • Comfortable using computers or mobile devices for work order management and basic reporting.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work outdoors in all weather.
  • Valid driver’s license, negative TB test, and current vaccinations for sanctuary access.
  • Employment contingent upon successful completion of a background check.

Job description

Maintenance Technician | IPPL | Summerville, SC

40 hours per week | May include weekends, callouts, and emergency response as needed.

Our Maintenance Technicians provide essential hands-on support to ensure the safety, functionality, and beauty of the International Primate Protection League (IPPL) sanctuary. Reporting directly to the Maintenance Lead, this role is responsible for the daily execution of repairs, habitat upkeep, and grounds maintenance. Maintenance Technicians play a vital role in creating a secure and comfortable environment for our resident primates through technical skills and dedication.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and emergency repairs, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and painting.
  • Assist in the construction, refurbishment, and repair of animal habitats.
  • Conduct regular walkthroughs of buildings and grounds to identify potential issues before they require major repair.
  • Work alongside the other maintenance and animal care staff to ensure project alignment.
  • Strictly adhere to all sanctuary protocols regarding working around non-human primates, including maintaining a mandatory no-contact policy and following all strict boundary restrictions.
  • Maintain compliance with USDA, OSHA, and internal sanctuary safety protocols at all times.
  • Utilize digital management software to receive tasks, track progress, and log completed work.
  • Provide regular updates to your supervisor regarding project status, equipment needs, and any observed hazards.
  • Use materials efficiently and help maintain inventory records to monitor supply needs.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Proficiency with power tools and industrial equipment.

  • Reliable and able to remain calm, composed, and focused.
  • Comfortable using computers or mobile devices for work order management and basic reporting.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., work on ladders, at heights, and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license, negative TB test, and current vaccinations (Tetanus, etc.) are required for sanctuary access.
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
Desirable Skills
  • Welding & fabrication
  • Knowledge of specialized paints & coatings.
  • 2+ years of experience in facility maintenance or a related trade (carpentry, electrical, etc.) is preferred
