Job summary

The St. Louis Public Library is seeking a Maintenance Technician to maintain and repair building systems across 16 library locations, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical components, while ensuring safety standards and reliable service for patrons.

You will diagnose issues, perform repairs, manage preventative maintenance, read blueprints, and document work in CMMS on an assigned iPad, coordinating with supervisors, external vendors, and facility teams.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 2–4 years of related experience and/or training in building maintenance.
• Degree from Mechanical Trade School or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.

The St. Louis Public Library is seeking a Maintenance Technician. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing all aspects of the buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment within the Library system. In this role you will perform:

Technical Maintenance & Repair

Diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.

Performing repairs on various building components such as windows, doors, walls, and structural damage.

Troubleshooting and fixing issues with equipment and machinery, including but not limited to appliances, pumps, motors and electrical components.

Installing new equipment, and systems according to technical manuals and blueprints.

Using a variety of hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, and potentially welding equipment.

Preventative Maintenance & Safety

Conducting regular inspections of buildings, grounds, and equipment to identify potential issues or safety hazards.

Ensuring compliance with all safety standards, environmental regulations, and internal company policies (e.g., OSHA, Lock Out Tag Out procedures).

Responding promptly to emergency maintenance requests and providing on-call support as needed.

Checking and maintaining equipment such as pumps, motors, refrigeration coils

Perform regular preventative maintenance (PMs) on various equipment at all library locations

General Upkeep & Administration

Performing general upkeep tasks such as painting, carpentry, drywall repair, and light landscaping/grounds maintenance.

Maintaining accurate records and logs of all maintenance activities, repairs, and parts usage, using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) on an assigned iPad.

Communicating effectively with supervisors, colleagues, library patrons, and external vendors/contractors.

Technical Knowledge: A strong understanding of various systems, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical systems. This involves the ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.

Troubleshooting & Problem-Solving: The ability to diagnose issues, identify root causes of equipment failure, and implement effective solutions quickly and logically.

You will need to have :

Tool Proficiency: Skilled use of a variety of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic instruments (e.g., voltmeters, calipers).

Physical Stamina: The role is physically demanding, requiring the ability to stand for long periods, walk, climb ladders (often up to 30 feet), kneel, crouch, and lift heavy objects (typically up to 50 pounds or more).

Attention to Detail: Meticulousness in performing inspections and repairs to ensure safety compliance and prevent recurring problems.

Communication Skills: Clear verbal and written communication is crucial for understanding instructions, reporting issues to managers, documenting work performed (often in a CMMS), and interacting with employees or customers.

Time Management & Organization: The ability to prioritize multiple tasks, respond to emergency requests promptly, and manage a schedule effectively. We maintain 16 libraries so time management is a requirement.

Adaptability: A willingness to work on a wide variety of tasks and adapt to evolving technologies and different work environments.

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Two to four years of related experience and/or training in building maintenance.

Degree from Mechanical Trade School or equivalent combination of education and experience.
