Job summary

Elizabeth River Crossings seeks a skilled Maintenance Technician to support the Elizabeth River Tunnels and ERC facilities. You will perform inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs across roofs, doors, plumbing, lighting, and related systems to ensure safe, reliable operations.

Ideal candidates bring hands-on experience in carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and general facility maintenance, and are able to work a flexible schedule when needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training in maintenance and repair procedures preferred.
• Minimum of four years of combined skilled facilities maintenance experience.
• Experience with carpentry, masonry, concrete repair, plumbing, general facility repairs, and basic troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

• Inspect buildings, structures, and facility assets to identify malfunctions, safety concerns, and preventive maintenance needs.
• Perform general facility repairs including carpentry, masonry, concrete repair, painting, door hardware, locks, and minor drywall repairs.
• Perform minor plumbing maintenance such as repairing leaks, unclogging drains, replacing filters, and supporting basic plumbing repairs.
• Perform limited lighting maintenance, including replacing bulbs and tubes as needed, while excluding electrical repair work on sockets, switches, outlets, ballasts, fuses, wiring, or similar components.
• Support minor mechanical maintenance on facility equipment such as pumps, valves, and related components.
• Respond to maintenance service requests, coordinate with other departments, and communicate repair status and follow-up needs.
• Coordinate with vendors and contractors to obtain quotes, schedule repairs, and verify work completion.
• Complete work orders and maintenance records accurately and on time.

Schedule

• Regular work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
• Inclement weather or emergency conditions may require 12‑hour shifts as needed to support maintenance operations.

Position Summary

Join the team that maintains the buildings, structures, and facility systems supporting the Elizabeth River Tunnels and related ERC facilities. The Maintenance Technician performs hands‑on inspections, repairs, preventive maintenance, and general facility support for roofs, bay and garage doors, egress and fire doors, fixed ladders, plumbing systems, pumps, locks, painting, carpentry, masonry, concrete, and other facility assets. This role helps keep critical transportation infrastructure operating safely, reliably, and with minimal disruption to daily operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect buildings, structures, and facility assets to identify malfunctions, needed repairs, safety concerns, and preventive maintenance needs.
• Perform general facility repairs including carpentry, masonry, concrete repair, painting, door hardware, locks, and minor drywall repairs.
• Perform minor plumbing maintenance such as repairing leaks, unclogging drains, replacing filters, and supporting basic plumbing repairs.
• Perform limited lighting maintenance, including replacing bulbs and tubes as needed, while excluding electrical repair work on sockets, switches, outlets, ballasts, fuses, wiring, or similar components.
• Support minor mechanical maintenance on facility equipment such as fire pumps, drainage pumps, sump pumps, check valves, backflow preventers, and valves.
• Respond to maintenance service requests, coordinate with other departments, and communicate repair status, concerns, and follow‑up needs.
• Coordinate with vendors and contractors to obtain quotes, schedule repairs, support outside service work, and help verify that work is completed efficiently.
• Complete work orders, maintenance records, history logs, inventory documentation, and related paperwork accurately and on time.
• Follow all safety rules, procedures, and company policies while operating tools and equipment and completing assigned maintenance tasks.

Performance Expectations

• Maintenance problems are promptly identified and resolved with minimal disruption to work schedules and operations.
• Maintenance and repair work is completed safely and in accordance with company policies, procedures, and established standards.
• Preventive maintenance is performed as scheduled and documented accurately.
• Work orders, maintenance history logs, inventory records, and required reports are accurate, complete, and timely.
• Communication and coordination are maintained with supervisors, team members, contractors, and other departments.

• Basic knowledge of facility maintenance, plumbing systems, limited lighting maintenance, air filter replacement, door and lock installation and repair, painting, small drywall repairs, and general repair procedures.
• Ability to use hand tools, maintenance equipment, materials, and basic repair methods common to facility maintenance work.
• Strong organization, attention to detail, communication, teamwork, and coordination skills.

Ability to work independently, understand and apply new concepts, manage time‑sensitive work, support projects, work a flexible schedule when needed, and successfully complete required background and drug screening.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, crawl, climb, reach, push, pull, grasp, and perform repetitive hand and finger movements.
• Ability to hear, see, communicate, and follow detailed instructions in an active maintenance environment.
• Medium work: ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds regularly.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed indoors and outdoors and may involve varying weather conditions, extreme temperatures, elevated areas, electrical hazards, moving equipment, fumes, odors, dust, gases, and other maintenance-related conditions.
• The role requires safe work practices, situational awareness, and consistent use of required protective procedures and equipment.

Mental Requirements

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to maintenance tasks, troubleshoot problems, follow detailed instructions, use basic math, read and write work‑related information, and communicate effectively with team members, contractors, supervisors, and leadership.
