Job summary

Compass Minerals, Inc. in Ogden, UT is seeking a Maintenance Technician to upkeep plant equipment, weld steel, and perform basic machinist tasks. You will read manuals, use power tools, and execute routine inspections.

This role involves rotating shifts, with days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required. Qualifications include a high school diploma and technical maintenance training; experience with conveyors, pumps, boilers, and mining operations is preferred.

Qualifications

• Must have high school diploma or equivalent; technical training preferred.
• Experience maintaining industrial equipment, conveyors, pumps and boilers is preferred.
• Experience with large processing or mining operations is a plus.
• Experience with JD Edwards, SAP, IFS or similar systems is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Follow safety and housekeeping rules, report or correct unsafe conditions.
• Repair, assemble and disassemble small gear boxes, pumps, transmissions and machinery per specifications.
• Weld mild steel; perform flat and vertical welds.
• Use cutting torch for freehand metal cutting and heating.
• Perform valve/bearing maintenance including packing, lubrication and repair.
• Perform basic pipe fitting for threaded and welded joints.
• Basic layout, equipment rigging and minor machinist duties with power tools.
• Perform routine inspections and create work orders for maintenance.
• Ability to work rotating shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Job description

Essential Job Functions:

• Follows established safety and housekeeping rules and reports, and/or, corrects unsafe conditions
• Reads and correctly interprets information contained in equipment and vendor manuals.
• Repairs, assembles and/or disassembles small gear boxes, pumps, transmissions and other machinery in accordance with manufacturers' specifications and recommendations.
• Welds mild steel. Performs flat and vertical welds.
• Uses cutting torch to accomplish freehand cutting of metals and/or heating of parts.
• Provides valve/bearing maintenance inclusive of packing, lubricating and replacement/repair.
• Performs basic pipe fitting as applied to threaded and welded joints.
• Performs basic layout, equipment rigging, some minor machinist duties & most commonly used power tools.
• Perform routine inspections
• Create work orders for maintenance work required in the plant
• Performs other functions as directed by the supervisor
• Ability to work rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and/or holidays as required.

Education and/or Experience:

• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, additional technical training may be required at various levels
• Previous experience or education demonstrating the ability to maintain equipment for proper operation, experience in large processing or mining operations preferred
• Prior work experience maintaining industrial equipment, conveyors & packaging systems, pumps, piping, boilers, heat exchangers, hydraulic systems, evaporators, crystallizers, thickeners, and other similar equipment preferred
• Experience with JD Edwards, SAP, IFS, or similar is preferred

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to touch, handle, or feel. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
