Job summary

The City of Brownwood is seeking a dedicated maintenance worker to support public works projects, including street repairs, drainage, and infrastructure upkeep.

You will operate a range of construction equipment and trucks, perform routine inspections, and assist with emergency operations as needed. Applicants should have a High School diploma or GED and preferably a Texas CDL Class B with an 'N' endorsement. This is a full-time, on-site position.

Qualifications

Job description

Works as part of a team to maintain and repair public works infrastructure, including streets and street right of ways, streetlights and signs, storm drainage systems and other city facilities. Operates a variety of construction equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance, and repair activities; performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks related to public streets, lands, or buildings. Position receives supervision in task performance and is expected to show good judgment within established guidelines. The nature of the job will require incumbent to be on call 24 hours a day, to include weekends and holidays as scheduled. Must be willing to adopt and exhibit the City of Brownwood “I SERVE” Core Values.1) Operates equipment including dump trucks, rollers, distributors, tractors, mowers, front-end loader power and hand tools, such as shovels, pickax, sledgehammer and street broom; 2) Responsible for patching of utility cuts and potholes; 3) Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisors, cleans equipment; 4) Smooth and finish surfaces of poured concrete, such as floors, walks, sidewalks, roads, or curbs using a variety of hand and power tools; 5) Align forms for sidewalks, curbs, or gutters; patch voids, use saws to cut expansion joints; 6) Will perform street and alley maintenance, and construction projects as directed; 7) Responsible for clearing debris from streets, alleys and drainageways, to also include tree trimming and tree removal when necessary; 8) Will be actively involved in emergency operations such as monitoring storms and high waters; 9) Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language. A High School diploma or GED is preferred; Experience driving trucks larger than ¾ ton is preferred. Experience in operating other related equipment is desirable.

Prefer a Texas Commercial Driver License Class B with an “N” endorsement.

Ability to transport self from site to site. Ability to operate/drive various types of equipment and vehicles to and from various work sites.

Ability to work in extreme temperatures, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, twisting, climbing, and lifting in order to maintain or repair the City’s right-of-way systems.

Employee will work with chemicals, mechanical, electrical and traffic hazards.

Ability to work in trenches and in streets where extreme hazards exist while performing duties.

Employee is frequently required to perform heavy lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to 100 pounds.

Employee will be exposed to dirt, dust, noises, fumes, odors, water, and mud.

Employee must be able to walk on slippery, loose, uneven, and sloped surfaces.

Ability and skill to operate equipment safely and efficiently, good driving skills.

Must possess mechanical abilities to perform preventative maintenance on equipment.

Must be able to read, write, and follow written and verbal instructions.
