Job summary

Qualifications

• Training and Experience up through the eighth grade and one year of related maintenance experience or equivalent.
• The position requires operating heavy equipment and performing related maintenance tasks.
• Ability to read blueprints and communicate effectively in a team environment.

Responsibilities

• Operates various complex vehicles and equipment and performs related labor duties for public works infrastructure.
• Maintains proper traffic control at work sites for safety of crew and public.
• Performs daily inventory checks on service trucks and obtains tools/equipment.
• Transports materials and heavy equipment to work sites.
• Inspects roads, bridges, and related facilities for safe conditions.
• Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance on tools/equipment.
• Cleans and repairs manholes and maintains sewer lines as needed.
• Provides landscaping maintenance and erosion/drainage improvements.
• Repairs pipes and roads, and supports water mains and hydrants.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature as assigned.

This is a broad classification in which incumbents are responsible for operating heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of public works infrastructure and assisting in training new employees. This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing.

This position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.

Responsibilities

• Operates various complex vehicles and equipment and performs associated labor duties in the construction and maintenance of public roadways, airfields, sewer, water, and/or storm water lines or haul waste sludge to and from facilities.
• Maintains proper traffic control at work sites to ensure safety for both the work crew and the motoring public.
• Performs daily inventory checks on service trucks and obtains proper tools and/or equipment to perform job task.
• Transports materials and heavy equipment to various work sites.
• Inspects roads, airfields, bridges and right-of-way to ensure safe and efficient conditions exist.
• Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
• Cleans and repairs manholes as necessary to remove debris, obstacles and to prevent infiltration and installs and maintains sewer lines.
• Provides landscaping maintenance to include: grooming, clearing of branches, and maintaining grass and brush, shrubs and flowers.
• Improves erosion and drainage problems.
• Repairs pipes, and maintains roads and ditches, airfields, water mains and fire hydrants.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level

Qualifications

Training and Experience (positions in this class require): Completion of coursework up through the eighth grade and one year of related maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above

Licensing Requirements (positions In This Class Require)

• Valid Driver's License from state of residency
• Some positions require: Road Flagging Certificate; Trench and Excavation Certificate; Confined Space Certificate; Commercial Driver's License; Work Zone Traffic Safety Certification

  Physical Requirements: Positions in this class require: climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures.

  This position may require: 24-hour on call assignment, overtime, or working weekends, holidays, 10-hour, 12-hour, and rotating shifts.
