The Public Works Department is seeking an experienced, hands-on maintenance professional with strong leadership skills and a commitment to providing safe, reliable, and high-quality public services. The ideal candidate has broad knowledge of public works maintenance operations, including streets, sidewalks, parks, facilities, and other public infrastructure, and is skilled at planning and prioritizing work, coordinating staff and resources, and ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently.

The successful candidate will be a dependable and approachable supervisor who leads by example, communicates effectively, and provides clear direction, training, and feedback to staff. They exercise sound judgment, take initiative, maintain high standards for safety and quality, and build positive working relationships with employees, contractors, and the public.

  2. Plans, prioritizes, assigns, and supervises maintenance and repair work for streets, sidewalks, storm drains, parks, medians, City facilities, and other public infrastructure. E
  3. Inspects work in progress and upon completion for compliance with City standards, safety regulations, and quality assurance. E
  4. Trains, supervises, and evaluates assigned staff; provides guidance and performance feedback. E
  5. Coordinates staff schedules, materials, and equipment needs for maintenance and special projects. E
  6. Oversees maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles; ensures proper use and storage. E
  7. Assists in budget preparation and monitors expenditures for assigned programs. E
  8. Responds to and resolves public inquiries and service requests courteously and effectively. E
  9. Maintains records of work performed, materials used, and equipment maintenance. E
  10. Participates in safety training and awareness programs and ensures safety compliance within the department and amongst the staff. E
  11. Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of public works maintenance, including streets, parks, and facility operations
  • Materials, tools, equipment, and methods used in construction and maintenance
  • Safety standards and regulations applicable to public works operations
  • Principles of employee supervision, training, and performance evaluation
  • Work planning, scheduling, and recordkeeping
Ability to:
  • Plan, assign, and supervise the work of maintenance personnel
  • Interpret and apply policies, procedures, and safety requirements
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare clear reports
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with staff, contractors, and the public
  • Work independently and exercise sound judgment
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional coursework or training in public works, construction management, or a related field is desirable.

Experience:

Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in public works maintenance, including at least two (2) years in a lead or supervisory role.

Any combination of training, education, and experience which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed herein may be considered.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
  • Possession of a valid Class “C” California Driver’s License is required. An incumbent is required to possess a valid Driver’s License and maintain an acceptable driving record.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT

All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of both a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting (A felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify the applicant from City employment).

PROBATIONARY PERIOD

The position has a 365 day probationary period in accordance with the employee handbook.
