Job Summary

The Maintenance Student Assistant performs general repairs in apartments, suites in student housing located in South Village, North Lake Village and West Lake Village. Spaces include residence halls, apartments, laundry facilities, community centers, warehouse/central energy plant, pump house and administrative offices.

Typical Duties
  • Assists in preparing our housing facility for the next incoming and returning group of students.
  • Comply with applicable environmental, health and safety laws and regulations, university policy and accepted safe work practices.
  • Assists with maintenance projects such as common cleanup, painting, moving furniture, inventory, fire and smoke alarm checks, inspections, or other projects as assigned.
  • Cleans and maintains all work areas, tools, and equipment.
  • Completes routine preventative maintenance such as replacing filters, checking fluid levels, inspecting belts, lubricating bearings, or other preventative maintenance as assigned.
  • Assists with repairs to drywall, ceilings, windows, doors, and door hardware.
  • Paints interior and exterior areas following repairs.
  • Assists with appliance repairs such as residential refrigerators, stoves, ovens, washing machines, dryers, etc.
  • Assists with plumbing work such as repairing water leaks, clearing clogged lines, installing new plumbing fixtures, gaskets, couplings, traps, valves, and supply lines.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Enrolled as a degree‑seeking student at Florida Gulf Coast University at the time of hire and throughout the appointment.
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and be in good conduct standing with the University.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be available to work a variable schedule based on operational needs, including:
    • Academic Year (August-April): availability between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM (Monday–Friday)
    • Summer: availability between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM (Monday–Friday)
    • During the summer term only, students may be eligible for free housing if they are available to work an on‑call schedule that may extend as late as 12:00 AM (midnight).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • General knowledge of building maintenance trades such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical.
  • Knowledge of basic hand tools, power tools, materials, ship equipment, and maintenance related processes.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
  • Ability to be physically active and perform a variety of skilled trade functions.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and environments.
  • Ability to follow and understand directions.
  • Ability to always maintain confidentiality and discretion.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Ability to re‑key, install, and repair locks and hardware.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of independent judgement in the interpretation, application, and enforcement of all rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Ability to work in the heat of the day.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to participate in an on‑call program.
