Job summary

The Town of Blacksburg is seeking a skilled laborer to support water and sewer construction and maintenance projects, including meter and hydrant work. This is a seasonal, multi-shift role with Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter schedules.

Candidates should have a High School diploma or GED, 2 years of relevant experience, and a Virginia CDL Class B with a clean driving record; training in work zone safety and trench/ confined space is preferred.

Job description

This position will perform skilled labor for various capitol construction projects, and repairs to both water and sewer utilities. This position will also be responsible for assisting with the removal of snow during periods of inclement weather.

Spring/Summer Shift

April 1st - August 31st, Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday, 6:30 am - 5:00 pm

Fall/Winter Shift

September 1st - March 31st, Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

• General labor using hand tools and small equipment

• Ability to work outside in varying weather conditions

Education andExperience

A High School Diploma or GED certification is required, as well as a minimum of 2 years previous experience in tasks relating to water and sewer installation, repair, and maintenance.

Special Requirements

• A valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License - Class B and an excellent driving record are required.
• VDOT Basic Work Zone Traffic Control and Flagger Certification
• Trench Safety and Confined Space training
• Position will be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and will be included in the random drug and alcohol screening program
