Job summary

City of Bartow is seeking an intermediate skilled maintenance worker to perform repairs, inspections, and routine maintenance on building systems and equipment in municipal facilities.

You will use hand and power tools, read blueprints or manuals, and coordinate with internal customers for major repairs. The role requires physical work, lifting up to 50 pounds, and willingness to work flexible hours.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 0–3 years of related maintenance experience.
  • Ability to read blueprints or equipment manuals.
  • Willingness to learn and follow safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspections, repairs and preventive maintenance on building systems and equipment.
  • Operate hand and power tools and basic equipment.
  • Inspect equipment to identify repair needs.
  • Troubleshoot issues to determine required repairs.
  • Plan repair work using blueprints or manuals as needed.
  • Perform general repairs not requiring specialized technicians.
  • Maintain facilities and assist with upkeep of amenities.
  • Order supplies and materials for repairs and maintenance.
  • Schedule major repairs with internal customers.
  • Identify root causes of mechanical problems and implement solutions.

Job description

Performs intermediate skilled work on a variety of construction, maintenance and repair projects. Operates specialized equipment in connection with task. Does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

  • Responsible for performing routine inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance on building systems and equipment to ensure the proper functioning and safety of a facility
  • Performs minor repairs like painting, drywall patching, and fixing doors while identifying issues requiring specialized technicians when necessary
  • Inspects and identifies equipment or machines in need of repair
  • Troubleshoots issues to determine necessary repairs
  • Plans repair work using buildings blueprints or equipment manual as needed
  • Performs general repairs that do not require a specialized technician. Examples may include repairing drywall, painting, and repairing doors and other building fixtures.
  • Performs routine maintenance on building and infrastructure systems
  • Cleans and assists with upkeep of the facilities and amenities
  • Orders supplies and materials needed for repairs and maintenance
  • Performs ongoing facility maintenance and completing repairs on equipment
  • Duties include fixing machinery, plumbing, heating, and wiring, inspecting building to confirm safety standards and scheduling major repairs with internal customers
  • Ability to identify the root cause of a mechanical problem and come up with a solution

  • Ability to follow instructions from supervisors or senior maintenance workers
  • Knowledge of general carpentry and repair
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Be familiar with safety protocols and regulations to avoid hazards and injuries
  • A broad knowledge of technical skills can help maintenance works diagnose and fix problems with machinery
Education and Experience:

Highschool diploma or equivalent; 0 to 3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities and other competencies necessary for the position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
  • Valid Florida Driver's License required
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Possess an aptitude and willingness to learn
  • On-the-job training is offered
