The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, now also known as Raleigh Water, provides water and sanitary sewer services to roughly 198,000 metered customers and a service population of about 600,000 people in Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell and Zebulon areas. Our Water Distribution division is looking for aMaintenance Specialist?to join our team. Maintenance Specialists?are devoted to providing repairs, preventive maintenance, utility locating, and does investigations within our water system. Maintenance Specialist?also performs maintenance and equipment operation for the City’s distribution system by performing skilled activities in support of maintaining, replacing, and repairing water assets (such as services, mains, and fire hydrants, etc.).

Work Hours:6:30 am - 3:00 pmThis position requires working on an on-call rotating repair call crew. which includes 8 hours of paid standby time per on-call week, plus the potential to earn overtime pay at 1.5 times the normal hourly rate for hours worked over 40.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Installs, replaces, and repairs assets such as water services, mains, fire hydrants, split services, sample stations, and auto flushers
- Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance with the proper tools and equipment, following established safety policies, procedures, applicable codes, and regulations
- Collects, prepares, and enters system data. Creates work orders, logs activities, updates maps, enters account data, compiles and prepares reports, and maintains records, files, and work-related documentation
- Serves as lead worker by assigning work and monitoring work completion
- Monitors and ensures safe working conditions and environment. Identifies potential hazards and initiates or coordinates corrective action to maintain safety
- Ensures availability, maintenance and operability of safety and work-related equipment. Monitors processes and activities to assure quality
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and four years of assignment-related equipment operation/driving experience or formal trades experience, or experience related to the fields listed below as shown:
- Landscaping: installer, maintenance, irrigation
- Construction: grading, storm drain, site work, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction
- Mechanic: heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems
- Farming: manual labor, equipment operating
- Moving Company: labor, truck driver
- General Municipal Worker: utility inspector
- Tech School Student: mechanical
- Firefighter: full or part-time
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
- NC WPCSOCC Collection System Operator Certification Grade I, or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire

ADA and Other Requirements:Positions in this class typically require standing, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise. Work is conducted in a crew setting primarily in an outdoors environment in close proximity to heavy equipment, vehicle traffic, and open excavations.
