Job Summary The Maintenance Service Attendant supports the safe, clean, and reliable operation of the City's transit fleet, with primary responsibility for washing, cleaning, and detailing the interior and exterior of City buses and other fleet vehicles. The position performs routine fueling, checks and replenishes vehicle fluids, prepares buses for daily service, and helps maintain clean, safe, and organized transit and fleet facilities. The position also provides general support to mechanics and technicians, retrieves parts and supplies, maintains fueling and service records, and assists with other routine fleet support activities. The position operates, transports, and relocates City buses and fleet vehicles for servicing and operational needs, including during emergencies, service disruptions, vehicle breakdowns, and severe weather events.
Note: This position is designated as a safety-sensitive position and is subject to Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol testing requirements in accordance with applicable federal regulations.
Hours of work: M-F - 1:00 - 9:30 p.m. or 1:30 – 10:00 p.m., and 4 hours on alternating Saturdays.
Minimum Requirements
Experience, Education, and Skills
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Six (6) months to one (1) year vehicle maintenance, fleet operations, transit operations, automotive service, equipment maintenance, or a related field.
- Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) training within 3 months of employment.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) B with Passenger Endorsement or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in basic mechanical repair of vehicles.
OR
Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job,
AND
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Preferred
- Previous experience in transit, fleet, automotive, heavy equipment, or municipal/public-sector operations.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and servicing practices.
- Knowledge of safety procedures related to shop environments, equipment operation, and fueling.
- Familiarity with tools, equipment, and materials used in fleet and facility maintenance.
- Skill in operating hand tools, power tools, and basic maintenance equipment.
- Skill in safely operating cars, light trucks, vans, and other assigned vehicles.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and respond to operational needs in a timely manner.
- Ability to maintain accurate basic records related to inspections, service, and maintenance support activities.

Essential Functions
- Washes, cleans, and details the interior and exterior of City buses and fleet vehicles to maintain established cleanliness and service standards.
- Fuels City buses and other fleet vehicles and performs associated fueling activities in accordance with established safety and operational procedures.
- Assists mechanics and technicians with preventive maintenance, routine inspections, minor repairs, and other vehicle service activities.
- Transports, delivers, and retrieves City buses and fleet vehicles for maintenance, repair, servicing, or other operational needs.
- Transports and relocates buses during emergencies, service disruptions, vehicle breakdowns, severe weather events, or other situations requiring immediate operational support.
- Retrieves parts, supplies, tools, and materials and assists with inventory control and organization.
- Maintains accurate vehicle service, maintenance, inspection, fueling, and related records in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Cleans and maintains fleet and transit facilities, including maintenance shops, work areas, yards, fueling areas, tools, and equipment.
- Safely operates City buses, fleet vehicles, tools, and equipment required to perform assigned duties.
- Responds to operational and service needs in a timely manner to support fleet and transit availability and continuity of operations.
- Follows established safety procedures, departmental practices, City policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Provides operational support during special projects, emergencies, severe weather events, and other departmental needs as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Travel
Standard Local Travel: This position requires occasional local travel within the County. Employees may be expected to walk or drive short distances to attend meetings, trainings, or perform work at other city buildings or partner sites.
Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily in transit and fleet maintenance facilities, vehicle wash areas, equipment yards, fueling stations, parking areas, and other locations where City buses and fleet vehicles are cleaned, fueled, serviced, and maintained.
- Duties are performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and may require working in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
- Work involves regular exposure to moving buses and vehicles, maintenance equipment, fueling systems, fuels, oils, lubricants, cleaning chemicals, vehicle fluids, and other materials associated with vehicle cleaning and basic maintenance activities.
- Work may require entering and exiting buses and other vehicles frequently and working around, inside, or near vehicles while performing cleaning, fueling, inspections, basic maintenance, or assisting mechanics and technicians.
- Work may involve exposure to moderate to high noise levels, vibration, dust, fumes, odors, exhaust, wet or slippery surfaces, and other hazards associated with transit, fleet, shop, wash, and fueling environments.
- The position requires frequent interaction with mechanics, technicians, bus operators, supervisors, vendors, contractors, and other City employees in a fast-paced operational environment.
- May be required to work irregular or nontraditional hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and during emergencies or severe weather events, to support transit and fleet operations.
- May be required to respond to operational emergencies, service disruptions, vehicle breakdowns, or other situations.
Physical Requirements
- Mobility: Ability to move throughout maintenance facilities, transit shops, yards, fueling areas, and other work locations. Ability to frequently walk and stand and occasionally climb stairs or vehicle steps and access various areas of buses and fleet vehicles while cleaning, fueling, inspecting, or performing basic maintenance tasks.
- Strength: Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and position cleaning supplies, tools, parts, equipment, and other materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance or mechanical devices used when appropriate.
- Endurance: Ability to perform physical work for extended periods, including standing, walking, cleaning, fueling, and assisting with vehicle maintenance in indoor and outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
- Dexterity: Ability to safely operate hand and power tools, fueling equipment, cleaning equipment, computers, and other equipment associated with vehicle servicing and maintenance. Ability to perform tasks requiring hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
- Flexibility: Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach overhead and below waist level, and work in various positions while cleaning, inspecting, fueling, or performing basic maintenance on buses and fleet vehicles.
- Vision and Hearing: Ability to visually inspect vehicles and equipment; read work orders, gauges, labels, safety information, and service records; and hear verbal instructions, warning signals, vehicle sounds, and other indicators necessary to work safely in transit, shop, yard, and fueling environments.
- Must possess and maintain a valid DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate (DOT medical card) as required for assigned driving responsibilities.
