Job summary

Katbus is seeking a motivated Maintenance Supervisor to oversee fleet vehicle repairs and maintenance operations in Knoxville. You will supervise mechanics, enforce safety and environmental programs, and coordinate with dispatch to track vehicle status and service needs.

Responsibilities include ensuring OSHA/EPA compliance, preparing maintenance reports, and managing parts procurement. Applicants should have CDL, extensive diesel maintenance experience, and supervisory skills.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess or obtain a Class B CDL with Passenger endorsement.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a bus or heavy-duty diesel mechanic.
  • Diploma or certificate in vehicle maintenance, diesel mechanics, or related field preferred.
  • Six (6) or more years of related experience and two years supervisory experience preferred.
  • Military experience may be accepted in lieu of equivalent experience or education.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise maintenance staff with a focus on safety; assign and direct work; coach and evaluate performance.
  • Coordinate work activities between shop sections and shifts.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations in maintenance operations.
  • Assist mechanics in identifying parts and ordering work-order parts.
  • Prepare maintenance reports and manage vendor invoices.
  • Operate diagnostic software to troubleshoot bus components.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Supervises mechanics in the repair and maintenance of fleet vehicles and equipment. Coordinates with dispatch to maintain situation awareness for vehicle repair requirements and to provide current fleet status. Effectively communicates maintenance work status between shifts. Trains employees and enforces department safety and environmental compliance programs. Assist Operations, Administration, and City departments in meeting department and company goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintenance Supervision (60%)
  • Provides meaningful supervision of maintenance employees with focus on safety; assign and direct work; coach counsel, ensure policies/procedures are communicated and followed; appraise performance; conduct effective action discussions.
  • Establish effective relationships and trust with Mechanics through regular communication, meaningful support, problem solving, and fair and consistent application of the labor contract, policies, and procedures.
  • Share in the responsibility for implementing and monitoring KAT’s EEO Policy and Program; complete assigned tasks to ensure that compliance is achieved.
  • Demonstrate skill and accuracy with the payroll system; approve accurate time records, administer leave requests, provide accrual and attendance information to employees; maintain consistent documentation.
  • Coordinates work activities between shop sections and shifts.
  • Possesses strong knowledge of OHSA and EPA regulations as they apply to maintenance shop operations and ability to enforce those requirements.
Administrative & Other Duties (40%)
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures of transit fleet maintenance operations and preventive programs.
  • Assign tasks to mechanics and inspects completed work for conformance to standards.
  • Assists mechanics in identifying parts required for vehicle repairs. May be required to order work order parts for vehicles being repaired.
  • Coordinates with vendors, validates shipment receipts, and approves department invoices.
  • Understands basic Federal, State, and Local procurement rules and regulations.
  • Prepares, analyzes, and submits periodic maintenance reports.
  • Manages software updates to diagnostic equipment.
  • Monitors fuel levels in underground storage tanks and orders fuel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance and Maintenance Manager.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience
  • Possess or obtain a Class B CDL with Passenger endorsement.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a bus or heavy-duty equipment diesel mechanic.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
  • Diploma or certificate from an accredited technical or vocational school in vehicle maintenance, diesel mechanics, or a related field.
Experience
  • Six (6) or more years of experience as a bus or heavy-duty diesel mechanic operations, transit, or a related field.
  • Two (2) or more years of supervisory experience in a maintenance-related setting.

Military experience may be accepted in lieu of equivalent experience or education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the repair, maintenance, and modification of light and heavy gasoline, electric, and diesel-powered automotive equipment, including mass transportation vehicles, shop equipment, and related components.
  • Knowledge of Cummins ISL and ISB as well as Allsion B400 and H40.
  • Possess knowledge of the use of all types of heavy-duty automotive machinist equipment and tools effectively in the repair or fabrication of mechanical equipment; possess a working knowledge in diagnosing and repair of malfunctioning equipment.
  • Must be able to work beyond normal shift and days off as needed.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operations or maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and parts books.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in a one-on-one and small group settings.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardizations exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to use computer equipment to track vehicle maintenance and prepare maintenance reports.
  • Ability to simultaneously operate computer diagnostic software and online diagnostic programs to assist mechanics in troubleshooting bus components.
  • Effective computer skills with basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
