TxDOT's Austin District invites you to join our team as a Maintenance Section Assistant in Mason, Texas. You will support the Maintenance Section Supervisor and lead a team of Transportation Maintenance Crew Chiefs, technical experts, and clerical staff to ensure safe driving conditions across the county.

You’ll lead daily operations, respond to emergency notifications, and handle assignments independently while ensuring high safety and quality standards.

  • Related college education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience year-for-year.

  • Assist in budgeting for the section and oversee crew needs.
  • Oversee work of maintenance/contracted crews including scheduling equipment, materials, and personnel.
  • Plan and implement emergency response to inclement weather, accidents, and spills.
  • Lead daily operations and serve as a resource for complex questions.

Transportation Mntnce Spec VII

This position assists a Maintenance Section Supervisor in overseeing work completed by the crews and contractors, which provides a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area. Leads the work of transportation maintenance crews and support staff. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties
  • Assists in budget preparation for the section.
  • Assists in issuing driveway permits and estimating the size of drainage pipes for driveways.
  • Assists the maintenance section supervisor in overseeing the work of the section and contracted crews including scheduling equipment, material and personnel necessary for section projects.
  • Assists with planning, coordinating and implementing emergency response to inclement weather, accidents, and hazardous spills affecting area roadways.
  • Handles public complaints.
  • Leads the work of transportation maintenance crews and support staff.
  • Maintains records on materials, supplies and personnel.
  • Responsible for operations of section in absence of supervisor.
  • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resources for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education

Experience:

6 YEARS of experience in roadway maintenance or construction related work (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent) Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license at time of hire. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Commercial Driver Certificate
  • Commercial Driver's License at time of hire

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used n intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Maintenance contract inspection procedures
  • Incident management procedures

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Balancing- walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
  • Talking- expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Visual Acuity- operate motor vehicle and/or heavy equipment
