Salary $25.60 - $36.37/hour; $4,437.33 - $6,304.13/month; $53,248.00 - $75,649.60/year

This is skilled and semi-skilled work involving general maintenance and repair. Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of skilled and semiskilled assignments in general maintenance and repair of municipal buildings, facilities, equipment, and devices. Some positions may require incumbents to work irregular hours or serve in a lead capacity. Tasks are of more than average difficulty and are performed in accordance with established procedures requiring exercise of reasonable initiative and independent judgment. Under general supervision, employees receive instructions orally and in writing with work being reviewed while in progress and upon completion, through observation and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Performs or serves as a lead worker over general maintenance work including carpentry, painting, plumbing, welding, roofing, plastering, masonry, and electrical repair on municipal buildings, facilities, and equipment; builds concrete foundations to facilitate proper installation; builds forms for concrete structures such as sidewalks and curbs, manholes, and pipelines, etc.

Installs new plumbing such as pipes, valves, drains, basins, faucets, lavatories, sinks, drinking fountains, water heaters, and a wide variety of other fixtures, facilities, and equipment.

Participates in installation of sprinkler and underground irrigation systems, including laying pipes and electrical lines to operate system; tests systems and detects and repairs leaks; maintains, repairs, and adjusts meters, governors, and timers.

Installs electrical wiring and fixtures; serves as lead worker and participates in new construction; installs electrical disconnect mechanisms; installs wall outlets and connects motors, appliances, heating and cooling equipment, and transformers; installs and/or removes electronic equipment such as digital paging system repeaters, satellite receiver system, data communications, and computer aided dispatch system components, alarms, sirens, medical telephone interconnects, portable radios, etc.; oversees calculation of line leads to determine wire and equipment size and capacity.

Measures angles, distances, and elevations for work activities; operates a variety of automotive equipment; operates and maintains shop equipment (lathe, drill press, table saw, etc.) and light and medium mechanical equipment (bench grinder, chain saw); operates various automotive equipment.

Coordinates work of a maintenance crew for maximum use of time and materials; completes daily time/activity reports; prepares work orders, action orders and requisitions; maintains tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair work; obtains estimates on small repair jobs; trains and leads workers in safety practices and proper use/operation of equipment.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: methods, practices, tools, and materials used in building and mechanical maintenance and repair work; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Some knowledge of: effective supervisory techniques, where required.

Skill in : use and care of tools and equipment pertinent to the performance of maintenance and repair work; operation of various types of automotive equipment.

Ability to: perform a wide variety of operations associated with building and mechanical maintenance and repair requiring physical strength; assign and supervise work of others, where required; work from oral or written instructions, blueprints, or drawings; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift over 60 lbs., mostly standing and acombination of working indoors and outdoors. Requires some use of computer,typing and viewing a monitor.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and one (1) year of experience in Infrastructure Care and Servicing; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license required; a valid Florida commercial driver's license may be required.

Evaluation ofeducation and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
