Job Summary

The Maintenance & Reliability Manager is responsible for leading the plant's maintenance, reliability, and engineering functions to maximize equipment uptime, asset life cycle performance, safety, quality, and operational efficiency. This position provides strategic direction for preventive, predictive, and reliability-centered maintenance programs while managing maintenance personnel, capital projects, engineering initiatives, maintenance budgets, and continuous improvement efforts.

The Maintenance & Reliability Manager serves as the technical leader for equipment reliability and asset management, partnering closely with Operations, Quality, Engineering, and Corporate teams to improve manufacturing performance through data-driven decision making, root cause analysis, reliability engineering, and maintenance best practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Departmental Management

  • Provides leadership and direction for the plant's maintenance and reliability functions. Areas of responsibility include:

  • Establishes direction for the maintenance department to ensure adoption of industry best practices and continuous improvement methodologies that improve equipment reliability and operational performance.
  • Responsible for developing departmental budget needs, justifying expenditures, and maintaining costs within approved budget parameters. Expected to understand the relationship between equipment performance, maintenance costs, and overall manufacturing profitability.

Reliability Leadership

  • Develops and implements reliability-centered maintenance strategies to improve equipment uptime and asset longevity.
  • Leads predictive maintenance activities including vibration analysis, lubrication management, thermography, ultrasonic inspections, motor circuit analysis, pressure differential monitoring, and other condition-based monitoring technologies.
  • Utilizes CMMS, production systems, and operational data to identify reliability improvement opportunities and prioritize maintenance activities.
  • Leads root cause analysis investigations and develops corrective actions for chronic equipment failures, downtime losses, and maintenance-related quality concerns.
  • Coordinates preventive maintenance optimization efforts to improve PM effectiveness and technician efficiency.
  • Identifies obsolete equipment and components and develops replacement, upgrade, and modernization strategies.

Supervision

  • Directly supervises maintenance supervisors, planners, reliability personnel, and other departmental employees as assigned.
  • Supervisory duties include hiring, promoting, coaching, counseling, training, work prioritization, goal setting, disciplinary action, performance evaluations, and employee development.
  • Ensures maintenance personnel are properly trained and qualified to safely perform assigned work.
  • Assures compliance with all company policies and governmental requirements related to personnel management.

Maintenance Operations

  • Ensures effective execution of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Works closely with Maintenance Planning and Scheduling personnel to prioritize work orders, manage backlog, and improve maintenance efficiency.
  • Develops and standardizes maintenance procedures, job plans, and equipment-specific maintenance standards.
  • Monitors maintenance performance metrics including equipment uptime, PM compliance, mean time between failures (MTBF), mean time to repair (MTTR), maintenance costs, and work order effectiveness.
  • Serves as the technical resource for troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and automation-related equipment issues.

Project Management and Engineering

  • Coordinates specification, planning, justification, and execution of capital projects and major maintenance initiatives.
  • Responsibilities include development of project scope, equipment specifications, vendor evaluation, contractor management, project scheduling, installation coordination, commissioning, and startup support.
  • Supports projects that improve safety, reduce manufacturing costs, increase production capacity, improve product quality, and enhance equipment reliability.
  • Ensures projects are completed safely, within budget, and with minimal disruption to plant operations.

Plant Engineering Expert

  • Serves as the facility's subject matter expert on equipment reliability, maintenance systems, and asset management.
  • Works closely with Operations, Quality, Technical Services, Corporate Engineering, and other departments to improve process performance through equipment modifications and reliability improvements.
  • Provides technical guidance and recommendations regarding equipment operation, design, and lifecycle management.

Safety and Regulatory Compliance

  • Supports all plant safety initiatives and promotes a strong safety culture.
  • Maintains and administers maintenance safety programs including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), machine guarding, confined space entry, and contractor safety requirements.
  • Performs audits to ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA, environmental regulations, insurance requirements, and company standards.
  • Ensures maintenance activities are completed safely and in compliance with applicable regulations.

  • Ability to build effective working relationships with production personnel, vendors, contractors, and corporate resources.

Education and Experience

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering, or related technical discipline required.

Experience

  • Minimum seven (7) years of maintenance, reliability, engineering, or manufacturing experience in an industrial environment.
  • Minimum three (3) years of leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience implementing reliability improvement programs, predictive maintenance technologies, and capital projects in a manufacturing setting.

Preferred Certifications

  • Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP)
  • Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE)
  • Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma Certification

Working Conditions

  • Approximately 60% of time is spent in an office or business atmosphere.
  • Approximately 40% of time is spent on the manufacturing floor and around plant equipment.
  • Core hours are typically 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM; however, the facility operates continuously and requires support during off-shift hours when necessary.
  • Regular weekend project work and emergency response activities may be required.
  • Position is expected to be available during after-hours situations requiring technical support or maintenance leadership.
  • Exposure to elevated temperatures, loud noise, moving equipment, chemicals, and industrial manufacturing environments.
