Job summary

Fresno County invites applications for the position of Maintenance Plumber. The incumbent will install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems and related equipment at Fresno County facilities, using appropriate procedures and techniques.

This is a journey level classification with expectations of skilled workmanship. Two pathways exist: four years of experience or two years plus a plumbing apprenticeship certificate.

Job description

The Fresno County Department of General Services invites applications for the position of Maintenance Plumber. Incumbents are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems and related equipment at Fresno County facilities. This is a journey level (experienced level) classification and the incumbent is expected to use appropriate procedures and techniques in accomplishing assigned tasks.

As a condition of employment, selected candidates will be required to obtain and maintain security clearance to access Fresno County detention facilities. Fresno County detention facilities are "No Hostage" facilities. In the event you are taken hostage, the County will not bargain for your safe release.

OPTION 1:

Experience: Four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience installing, maintaining, and repairing piping, plumbing fixtures, and related equipment in a commercial and/or industrial setting.

OPTION 2:

Certification: Possession of a certificate of completion from a plumbing apprenticeship program recognized by the California Apprenticeship Council, the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training, or a state apprenticeship council authorized by the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training.

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time, paid work experience installing, maintaining, and repairing piping, plumbing fixtures, and related equipment in a commercial and/or industrial setting.

In addition to the options listed above, the following is also required:

LICENSE:

Possession of a valid Class “C” driver’s license, or equivalent.

OTHER:

As a condition of employment, selected candidates will be required to obtain and maintain security clearance to access Fresno County detention facilities.

INITIAL INTERVIEWS TENATIVELY SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 9, 2026

Subsequent interviews will be conducted approximately two weeks following candidate certification to the hiring department.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Pursuant to Fresno County Personnel Rule 4 - Selection Process, applicants may be required to complete an examination process and successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of 3 months and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur. Should a recruitment be open on a continuous basis, eligibles shall be certified in the order they are received not to exceed the maximum certification the department is entitled to.

• The eligible list for this recruitment may be extended up to 12 months, and may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions.
• Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.

This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back, and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved.
