Responsibilities

  • Assemble, install, maintain, and pressure test pipes, fittings, and fixtures for heating, drainage, sprinkler, and gas systems.
  • Detect needed repairs and complete them per work orders and inspections.
  • Install and repair pipes, valves, fixtures, and plumbing equipment including sinks, toilets, and water heaters; gas appliances.
  • Receive work orders, select materials, estimate time and materials, and record usage.
  • Inspect completed work and ensure areas are clean.
  • Collaborate with principals and supervisors to complete projects and respond to emergencies.

Job description

Primary Purpose

Under general supervision, maintain the flow and drainage of water, air, and other gases by assembling, installing, and repairing pipes, fittings, and plumbing fixtures districtwide. Maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all plumbing systems in district facilities.

Qualifications (Experience/Education/Certification)

High school diploma or GED; clear and valid Texas driver’s license; Texas journeyman plumber’s license

Major Responsibilities
Maintenance and Repair
  • Assemble, install, maintain, pressure test all pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating water, drainage, sprinkler, and gas systems according to specifications and plumbing codes.
  • Detect needed repairs on building, grounds, and equipment following established inspection procedures. Determine sources of plumbing malfunctions and complete repairs as indicated or according to work orders.
  • Install and repair pipes, fittings, valves, fixtures, and plumbing system equipment including sinks, commodes, and water heaters. Install and repair kitchen equipment such as gas stoves and dishwashers.
  • Receive and complete work orders. Select material and hardware and make time and materials estimates. Maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
  • Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean.
  • Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects.
  • Respond to emergency calls as needed.
Safety
  • Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials. Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge of plumbing repairs, maintenance, and installation techniques.
  • Knowledge of plumbing codes.
  • Ability to train and lead personnel as needed.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, written reference material.
  • Effective organizational, communications, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to operate all equipment required for plumber, troubleshooting, and repair.

Working Conditions (Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Demands)

Tools/Equipment Used: Plumbing tools and equipment including pipe bender, propane torch; hand tools; power tools; heavy equipment including forklift, trencher, backhoe; light truck or van.

Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/ stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable position.

Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladder/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving.

Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and fumes, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; workaround gas lines; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent district-wide travel.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
