Position Overview
The Maintenance Planner is responsible for developing comprehensive, execution-ready job packages from approved work orders to drive safe, reliable, and cost-effective maintenance operations. Utilizing SAP and hands-on field assessments, this role scopes labor, materials, equipment, and third-party services while embedding safety controls and standard operating procedures into every plan. Serving as a technical bridge between operations, engineering, and field execution, the planner also supports procedure management, MOC (Management of Change), and work order continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
1. Job Scope Definition & Field Planning
- Field Walkdowns: Conduct on-site inspections to assess field conditions, access requirements, equipment isolation needs, and potential interference before finalizing job scopes.
- Work Order Screening: Review incoming work orders for technical clarity and completeness, routing incomplete scopes back to the gatekeeper with actionable feedback.
- Package Development: Build comprehensive job packages detailing step-by-step task instructions, required craft skills, estimated man-hours, specialty tools, rigging/scaffolding needs, and external service contracts.
- SAP / CMMS Administration: Input, maintain, and update work orders, bills of materials (BOMs), requisitions, and scheduling parameters within SAP PM.
2. Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Hazard & Safety Integration: Identify required permits (e.g., Hot Work, Confined Space, Line Break) and solicit hazard assessment data to embed job-specific safety requirements into every package.
- Procedure Compliance: Enforce the Maintenance Procedure Use Policy by ensuring every release package references an approved standard maintenance procedure or verified Procedure Exemption.
- Management of Change (MOC): Author, review, and initiate MOC requests for modified maintenance procedures, equipment specs, and process checklists.
3. Continuous Improvement & Technical Support
- Feedback Loop: Partner with execution crews to capture post-job feedback, updating task lists, part requirements, and labor estimates to optimize future work cycles.
- Procedure Authoring: Serve as a subject matter resource to create, revise, and standardize maintenance procedures, job aids, and checklists.
- Mentorship: Serve as an informal technical resource and peer mentor for less experienced planners and technicians.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Associate degree (A.S./A.A.S.) in an engineering, industrial technology, or related technical field; or 3+ years of equivalent hands-on experience in industrial maintenance, plant operations, or manufacturing.
- Systems Experience: Working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), with hands-on proficiency in SAP PM preferred.
- Technical Skills:
- Ability to read P&IDs, equipment manuals, schematics, and mechanical blueprints.
- Familiarity with industrial safety standards (OSHA, Lockout/Tagout, hazard analysis).
- Understanding of Management of Change (MOC) and document control workflows.
- Core Competencies: Strong analytical problem-solving, cross-functional communication, field coordination, and detail-oriented planning.
